Keanu Reeves' weight

Did anyone else think he’s put on a bit of weight? Or was it to bulk up a bit to get in shape to portray and alcoholic cop?

Fair play to him - I never knew he was such a method actor

He changes his weight around a lot for films; for 1993's Little Buddha he went on a month-long diet of a single orange a day, with water, until he was generally skeletal looking and you could reportedly see his ribs (I haven't watched the film).

There was originally supposed to be a stunt guy who took over for that so that Keanu wouldn't have to lose the weight, but he said he would do it himself and he did. Apparently his drastic diet caused some problems with his liver.

Right after that came Speed; still looking half-starved, he hit the gym for eight weeks straight and managed to bulk up in time.

1997's The Last Time I Committed Suicide - he had to gain weight, so he had a nice time binge eating and drinking and getting fat. He said it was the most fun he ever had preparing for a role.

A few months later he was back to regular weight for The Devil's Advocate, and after that it was off to The Matrix and three months of intensive kung fu training.

He's awesome.

Agreed, Keanu really went for it in his roles. I think the fuller face showed some age in Keanu. He rocked it in the role though. Loved his performance in here.

I really thought he looked better with a little weight on him. He's typically too skinny and scrawny.

I hope he stays that way....it makes him hotter!

I actually like how he looked when he was really thin, like in Johnny Mnemonic. I think his face looks best when you can see his awesome bone structure.

He did say that he put on some weight for the role, I think he said something to the effect of wanting to look like a guy who had been around the block but was still strong. I thought it worked perfectly for the role.

One writer said he was "built like an ox." Which worked for me.

I suspected something like that. I've been reading through some interviews and comments made about him from other actors who talk about his dedication to every role. He did look like a guy who drank alot but was still pretty strong when the chips were down. In one of his fight scenes, he's a big dude man. I definitely wouldn't want that coming at me in a street fight. He looks strong enough to pick you up and throw you some distance.

Yeah, it works for me too. A little too well maybe ;) LOL

He was pretty buff in Point Break and Speed and then got scrawny for The Matrix but he was trying to portray the computer geek/office worker.

He looked a little thicker but I was more surprised how old he looked. I know the guy's probably in his mid-forties now but I'm so used to seeing him in movies where he appears youngish that seeing it was a little surprising.

He doesn't look that old even when he's rocking a beard.

'Cause I'm Black you think I did it?

Keanu's belt size does look larger than usual in this movie. He probably gained weight so that he would look buff as a police officer.

Yeah. I heard he gained 23 pounds in order to play Detective Tom Ludlow in this movie. He looked pudgy but not too pudgy. I think he was aiming for an semi-aging, alcoholic cop who still showed signs of strength and determination. He surely nailed it. And he still looking fine with a little meat on the bones.

I though he looked a bloated mess in this film; that may work for the character fine but it doesn't suit Reeves IMO.

Bloated mess? No. Perhaps you have a vision problem? Or maybe you are into stick figures?

reply

"bloated mess" I think you're guilty of some hyperbole.
