Is Reeves in the movie a racist?

In the opening scene, seems he said, was he that just kidding?

reply

The opening scene (him with the 2 koreans) was him being a sarcastic dick to them so they'd steal his car, and as he mentioned, the guy talked black, dressed white, and drives jew but expected him to know that he was Korean and not Japanese.

I don't get a racist vibe from Ludlow thru-out the movie though.

I agree with the second poster but to add to that he had a Latino girlfriend so that's another point to the non racist column.

Detective Ludlow could be a racist if he investigated himself as well as he does the the L A police department. It takes a person versed in the Los Angles Police Departments racist history to answer that question. You have know about the rampart scandal and watch movies like L.A. Confidential, Colors, Boyz In the Hood and Menace To Society.(Celluar-see special features). In L.A. Confidential the systemic racism (albeit in the 1950 or there abouts) is depicted in the scene where the officers know they can pin a rape case on *beep* rather than solve the case. In Boyz, there is a priceless interaction between Cuba Gooding Jr.'s character and a Black cop who despises his own race. Few white American's know of these intra-racist tendencies and it is not intended to invite a stupid line of debate about slavery and such. Nonetheless, intra-racism are best revealed in cop dramas where cops are already infused with a prejudice against those they serve.

Ludlow may be a racist but that does not keep him from being a good cop. Often times racist characters mimic real life racist and have ethnic girlfriends. Keep in mind what his partners said about how they admired the Brown skin) girlfriend as well as Washington' widow. In that instance, they embody not so much racist but sexist views. Yet all them hate each other. They are minions in a system that does not allow them to have compassion. Thus given the opportunity any of them could reveal racist tendencies. Ludlow is a killing machine. He represents the kind of character that Russel Crowe (Bud) does in L.A. Confidential. He hates criminal who thrive on the weak (eg women). He will ride the earth of them. He is therefore a hero, Yet in the process he reveals that he has some unresolved issues. Perhaps he is the victim of such. Racist make great executioners. You point them in the direction of the enemy and they go but they often reduce everyone based on stereotype and prejudice.

I love that you're implying that in order to know about LAPD racism or corruption, you have to do research... in the form of watching movies. Lol get real, man.

Just like everything in life there are degrees of racism. I'd say he was casually racist a couple of times in the movie but it seemed more like he was using it to get under their skin. He strikes me as the kind of guy who would (given he wasn't a hardass cop) double check his doors were locked when driving through a black neighborhood.

being in an interracial relationship does not make either one of the people " not racist ". i know tons of black dudes into white girls who are racist as hell, i know tons of white guys into black girls who are racist as hell. i know jew guys who are into asian girls who are racist as hell. i know french people into latinas who are racist as helll.

Well said.

Always look for the positive in every situation.

considering Reeves is part Asian on his father's side. Then again, he's playing a character in a movie so...
Russell Crowe's character in "Muholland Drive" was racist.

reply

No. He was under cover and he was antagonizing them so they'd steal his car and he'd trace it to their hideout.
