Reeves is horrible

Why do we have to keep giving him lead roles? He is a TERRIBLE actor. I usually like whitiker, but I felt like he fell flat on this one. The best performance was definately by Hugh Laurie(Lt. Bigs). Overall, the movie was decent at best. It was a good story, but a little hard to follow for a lot of people I am sure. At least we got to see Hugh Laurie show his skills on the big screen.

Correction: YOU think Reeves is horrible. Some of us do think the guy can act.

He "IS" not a terrible actor...

"What are you looking at daddy-o?!"

reply

Like it or not he always has and always will. I would say he's a good actor because he keeps your attention, even through his corny lines. Think about it, hardly any of his movies have ever bombed...why would they not give him lead roles, his movies are always money-makers.

Agree w/ Anakin McFly (Call me Emmett Vader) - Keanu can definitely act, and act well. OK, maybe 'Bill and Ted'
was a teen douche fest, but then, 'Point Break' anyone? Hello? He was excellent in that, and he's way better in this! (Of course, he was perfect as Neo in "The Matrix" trilogies, but who's counting..)

Anakin McFlyswatter, you should be commended on your tactful post - I would have told the guy to go eFF himself (or OFF himself), because Reeves is never horrible, and he was really, really good in "Street Kings", a film I will see at least a half dozen times before I die. I Hope.

Exactly. Keanu rocked in this, and I bought the DVD because I love this movie. Everyone in it is excellent. How can that dork say Forrest Whitiker was bad? He was the King, and that last scene - unforgettable! He's super-talented. Then you have Chris "Cap" Captain America Evans, before the fame, and he shows what he's capable of. Then, there's House doing his American accent to perfection, and the rest of the cast are ALL great. So yeah, there are MANY of us who like Keanu's work. And we have the proof to back it up.

Reeves is definitely better than Whitaker who is an Oscar winner in this movie so he's not that terrible.

reply

If he's terrible... whom in your opinion is really good?

reply

"whom...is really good?" ??? How can you expect anyone to take you seriously? Finish grammar school, then post on grownup boards, mmkay?

Anyway, yeah, I wanted this movie to be good, I really did. I wanted Reeves to be good. He sucked. He wasn't gritty or hard or anything. He was just Keanu: same darn thing as always. Forest....overrated. What a waste of time.

And what is that "same darn thing", exactly? Or are you one of those folks who can't tell the difference between Tom Ludlow and, say, Ted Logan? OH LOOK THEY HAVE THE SAME INITIALS!!!!11

Chill, Kevin, there's no need to bite my head off just because I ask you who do you think is really good...

Secondly, I think Keanu didn't perform that badly in Street Kings, or any other movies for that matter, maybe some better than the others, but not to the extent that it makes it difficult to watch.

reply

I've enjoyed plenty of Reeves's films. His performance in Street Kings probably even rates in the top 1/2 of the films he's done. That having been said, I agree that he's a little robotic. I enjoy pretty much everything Whitaker does. I thought he did a great job in this movie; the man can act.

Best statement about Reeves, ever!

I own a book that is about analyzing his acting style and the author says that he is the first actor who shows such an chiastic performance (speech and body does not work coherently, but entangled, which causes questions in the observer). The author states that this style is the future of film. I think most people are not used to this NEW ERA and therefore bash that which they aren't used to.

reply

I think hes good in this kind of movies ,where he shows this dark side , mysterious side. But things lime romantic comedies for example ,i don't think he fits very well.

reply

I don't know anything about a 'NEW ERA' but when it comes to films, KR always plays KR. I watch his stuff, and I always know that I'm watching KR. No suspension of dis-belief. He's not unpleasant. Now contrast KR with Jeremy Renner. Who would you rather have in your film?

reply

I'd say he is a TERRIfic actor but not a TERRIble one, and JUST not. "TERRIFIC" is that the word u were trying to say? :P

reply

As Ted would say

Whoah!

I usually find Reeves performances to be totally uninspiring in almost all of his movies but this movie was a definite exception. Can it be? Has Keanu Reeves finally decided that he's capable of portraying a second emotion on-screen???

Hey, I thought you had her at 'Squishy Ball'

reply

IMO Keanu didn't show any definite diversity in this film. He was exactly the same in Street Kings as he was in Point Break and Speed. Nothing he did in this film really stood out and made you say, "I haven't seen Keanu Reeves like this before".

I wasn't particularly fond of Whitaker's performance either. I dunno, it just seems to me like he didn't put that much effort into this one.

Hugh Laurie, Chris Evans and Common were my favourites.

reply

I disagree. Im thinking back to Speed and point break and see a noble guy....hes not all that noble in this....his character in this doesn't really care. He's haunted. Keanu in this was much darker, which I like. I will say though that he still used his whispery voice in this just like in other movies hes been in however I think this time it works. His characters inconventional way of getting stuff done made him dark enough to use that voice. Throw in a couple more F-Bombs and you got a decent movie, at least I thougth so :) There is just something about Keanu. I think I want to see him as some gangster bad-ass muscle that doesnt talk much....:)

No. Just... no.

There were no 'Whoa's in Speed.

I counted.

I guess I've always been a bit of a Keanu fan. I've seen all of his movies and I root for him to do well because he's such an easy target for criticism. I will agree that he's had quite a few wooden moments, but he's not a 'horrible' actor, he could be quite decent at times. AND I have to say - I disagree, completely..he did a fine job in "Street Kings" I felt he was really in character for this one. He showed a range of emotions. I could see the loss in his eyes during the funeral scene and the inner strength of his character. The actor playing Diskant did a great job also, but he didn't steal the scene from Reeves because Reeves was portraying the part of the detective believably. I honestly can't recall any wooden moments on his part.

reply

I disagree with the OP. I've always thought Reeves was rubbish in every thing except the Bill and Ted films but I was surprised to find myself thinking he was good in this. In fact the Oscar winning Forest Whittaker who was so good in King of Scotland was a real pain, leaving Reeves with the acting honours.
It's a stange world sometimes.

reply

Check out The Gift, he plays a good redneck in that one. I've been a fan of his pretty much since the beginning of Bill & Ted so maybe I am partial, but I do agree he has his moments and then others when he is that "surfer dude". You have to understand a lot of his parts are written that way though.....River's Edge, Bill & Ted, The Prince of Pennsylvania, even Point Break. He is always suppose to be that "whoaaaaaa" type of character to put it lightly, so he plays the part. I think his shift in performance delivery can be seen in movies such as Little Buddha, The Gift, Street Kings, and to an extent in Constantine and The Devil's Advocate for example. I LOVE Point Break, I don't care what anyone says but that movie is a 90's classic in my eyes- lol.

Isn’t it nice that we can come & post posts that are thought provoking or otherwise senseless?
