Affleck Still Can't Act.......

How long will it take for directors and assorted movie makers to realize that having Ben Affleck in their cast is a serious liability?? While I'm sure he's a very nice man, he just can't act!!

He is very wooden and unbelievable in this movie. He says his lines like an automaton. If he's there just to show off his pretty face, I say there are a million and one of those in Hollywood. At least find one that can act!

Nicholas Cage's acting is phony and grating, but he keeps getting hired to star in major films. Ben may not be a great actor, but at least his acting, though limited, is not as awful as Nicholas'.

reply

Cage is a great actor compared to Affleck.

Affleck doesnt act. He is just himself in some role with a fake name. Cage is like that now, but when he was younger and less popular, he TRIED to act. Some "actors" that can't act and only showcase their personality have a lot of charisma to make up for it (a la Brad Pitt or a young Cruise). It would be funny to see Affleck do theatre.

I would pay to watch that.

reply

I think Affleck can act, he just doesn't always do it well. But I thought he played this movie great. I actually came on here to see if anybody other than me thought that this was one of Affleck's better roles.

reply

Dude, Nicholas Cage won an Oscar....that's the award they give for acting....

reply

so did Roberto Benigni, though. So it doesn't really mean much.

Nic Cage is a great actor. have you seen "Leaving Las Vegas". or better yet Adaptation. Raising Arizona, The Rock. All fine examples of his talent.

reply

I did see 'Leaving Las Vegas' and I was truly impressed by all the acting in it. I don't think it would have been such a successful dramatic movie if there hadn't been that hooker aspect to the whole movie.

The way the movie begins with the heroine saying that she will do anything if you just pay her - of course, they lead off with some lesbian sex to show how truly desperate she is - you know that everything that follows (including some violence that is bound to turn THAT kind of pervert on) is going to be seedy and gross.

Would Ben have done as fine a job as Nic Cage? No, because I think he has too much energy. Cage is always basically lethargic or strung out. Cage could never play a convincing coach or athelte, in my opinion.

I really saw good acting when Ben was in 'Bounce' with Gwyneth Paltrow.

reply

He's a better actor than you are a critic! He's not in a chair at home pontificating. He is however, doing the job he's paid to do and he is entertaining. it's not brain surgery.

reply

Why should they? He makes money, doesn´t he? Rock Hudson was pretty wooden in his time, still he was a box-office hit because of his looks. Talent doesn´t matter much for producents: there was a time, when katharine Hepburn and Greta Garbo were box-office poison!

reply

I wouldn't nominate Rock Hudson as the greatest actor ever, and can understand why some folks think he wasn't much of an actor (though I think he actually did some damn fine performances), but "wooden"? Hudson had a lively spark to him and was certainly not wooden.

Not sure yet about my assessment of Ben Affleck (I've certainly not seen him shine in a wide range of roles and styles), but I have found him good in at least a few things, including MAN ABOUT TOWN.

reply

Just caught this movie on cable. What a disaster!! Affleck IS a terrible actor.

reply

I wasn't expecting much going into this movie but found it to be rather funny and well acted. I thought this is definetly one of Affleck's better performances. John Cleese was hillarious as always.

I'm 71 and been a movie fan for 65 years -- seen them all, and enjoy TCM most on cable. I'm here to say Ben Afleck is as good as any leading man Hollywood produced. Every sneer you hear about him was earlier directed at Clark Gable, Robert Taylor, Clint Eastwood, or any male from the star making factories. The real actors come from stage -- Fredric March, Arthur Kennedy, Marlon Brando...

I enjoyed Man About Town more than any other comedy from 2006. Afleck was outstanding and I must learn more about Mike Binder's work.

I watched Man About Town on cable last night, out of boredom. Not a good film, but it had it's entertaining moments, so at least I'm not asking for those two hours of my life back.

Affleck was OK in this role, when it didn't ask too much of him except some slapstick, but let's be honest...in the scenes where he's supposed to show vulnerability, he's limited. I think that's why his film career has been so uneven. When he's cast right, he gets the job done credibly. When he isn't, he stinks up the screen. You can say the same about many actors. Some are incredibly versatile, but Ben isn't one of them.

I'm concerned about his casting in State of Play. He will be working with one of the great actors of our time, Russell Crowe. Will Ben pull down the film or will Crowe elevate it? Ben plays a politician. He even looks like Mitt Romney, so maybe on superficial appearances at least, he'll be credible.

reply

I think the way Nick Cage was introduced into this argument is quite comical.

Here's the strange thing with sir Ben Affleck, the man is a better actor when he's out of his comfort zone, than when he is in it. If you haven't noticed, all his bad movies, or at least his worst performances, have been the ones where he's played Ben Affleck. When he tries to do something different, when he tries to actually provide an angle to his characters, I love Ben, I think he does a great job. Otherwise he's just dull on screen.

Whereas Nick Cage, is the exact opposite. Cage is great at playing the same character over and over (fairly love it or hate it if you ask me), but whenever he steps out of his comfort zone (ghost rider anyone? captain corelli's?) he's an awful, awful actor. Unfortunately, personality is more marketable over performance, and a guy like Nick Cage is going to have far more movie roles than Ben ever will.

reply

You wouldn't even be close to his level if you tried very hard, so...

"I won't say a single solitary slovo unless I have my lawyer here. I know the law, you bastards"

reply

I think Ben Affleck can prove his acting skills in the movie of Terrence Malick...
I think this will be change his career, if he will be good in it.

The problem is....Ben Affleck can act but he just acts in the wrong movies!
