It IS a good movie. My feeling is that this is definitely one of Affleck's best performances, and, having worked on the film I have seen it many times now. Also Rebecca Romijn gives a really touching performance. But my favorite characters are, as in so many Mike Binder films, all the supporting characters. John Cleese is, as expected, really funny in the film. But Mike Binder, Gina Gershon, Adam Goldberg, Jerry O'Connell, and Amber Valletta also give such funny and insightful performances.
Some folks are going to be biased against the film because of Affleck's presence, some will be biased towards it. But I certainly hope that most the folks watching it will enjoy themselves.
I saw this like a year ago and thought it was really good. Wondering when the heck its gonna be released. I'm working on a Mike Binder film tomorrow so maybe I'll get the chance to ask him what the hell is up w/ it.
just finished watching it tonight ..at home on tv ( dont ask ) seeing Johhny fever dance around naked in front of a fish tank was jarring enough , but watching 'fleck smash thru this movie like a bull in a china shop was just to much . and i would love to smash that faggy smile right off Jerry O'Connell's mug !!
I saw it 2 weeks ago (sneak preview in the netherlands) and I liked it a lot. I read a review saying that its not that great because it's neither comedy nor drama, and I think I know what the moviecritic means by that, but I enjoyed nonetheless. It's an 'intelligent' movie, with a few good laughs.
This movie was god *beep* awful. Ben Affleck was terrible. Normally I find him either just boring or occasionally even decent. But for god sake almost all of this movie was terrible. Some of the ideas brought up in the film are good valuable lessons. However, the music, the direction, and the acting - aside from Howard Hesseman and John Cleese - is at best terrible. Rebecca Romijn should have stayed a model. And Jerry O'Connell?!?!?! How does this *beep* moron still get work? I don't understand it. I even like Adam Goldberg at times, but he couldn't save this quickly sinking ship. I hope it never comes to theaters, so I won't have to see any trailers on TV. 1/10
Just saw it. I'd give it a 7 out of 10. Affleck's performance is good, although this is his 3rd movie in a row playing an rich executive (he was a music publicist in Jersey Girl, an record executive in Surviving Christmas, and a talent agent in this movie). But it works.
It's a cross between a comedy and a drama, fairly touching at times with some real funny moments. Acting was very good, especially John Cleese. I'm still surpised that such a low-profile movie attracted so many fairly big names. Both the score and Fredo Viola's music were fitting, and I'd buy a soundtrack if it were released. There's an animation scene that's very awkward, but pays off later in the movie, and Howard Hesseman's humor might not be for everyone.
I thought it was okay at best. I'd give it a 6/10.
Acting-Affleck...not bad. Good enough. Rebbeca Romijn-Awful Rest of the cast-Excellent...Especially Mike Binder/Gina Gershon/Kal Penn
Music/Score-Hit and miss. Tryed the whole indie thing. Didn't really work.
Script-Not so good. Tryed way to hard to be dark...It was as if Alan Ball had written it in a coma.
Best part about it-Entertaining. Worst part about it-Rebbeca Romijn and how they wasted John Cleese with dull lines.
Even though there aren't many perks to the movie, I was entertained and wanted to know what was going to happen to Jack. Its worth a look. oh and Ling Bai was sexy as hell in it!
i had no idea this movie was 'low-profile' with all the 'big' names in it.
but if all the posts in this thread is any indication of "low-profile" - i wish ALL movies were so (low-profile, that is).
i can agree with EVERY post in this thread !!
from those who think it was 'gawd-awful' to those who enjoyed it - all valid points - i wouldn't say it was a "good movie" - but i was entertained, and it had good values as someone had stated.
i wouldn't see a movie if it just had Ben Affleck, i went to see it for John Cleese - and as someone said, he was under-utilised - but his character wasn't one of the main ones, so i'll just take what i can get.
all in all, a pleasant experience - although the ending was a bit 'wussy' after all the "heavy build-up".
not a very good resolution - but the first two parts were worth it.
i would recommend it to anybody who had thoughts of staying away BECAUSE of Ben Affleck.
not to say that he redeemed himself or anything, but unless you have a deep hatred and can't stand him, then give the movie a chance.
Yeah, if you don't care that the main character isn't a very likable person or if you don't mind a wife being rewarded with a happy ending for cheating on her husband.
