fantastic lovely simple film *spoilers*

loved the film. Loved the kindness in the main characters eyes. He was a very sincere caring lovely guy. Great film. Really silly question though. Was lechien getting his end away at the end cause he wasn't supposed to have fancied any of his earlier prospects? Or was it because everyone was watching or something like that. Anyway definately worth seeing 7/10

I agree, he looks like the kindest man in the world! It seems too human, but I think the dog just wanted to choose his own mate! Of course, any resulting pups won't be champions, but maybe that's the point. I don't know.

reply

I got the impression that he didn't care about the pups, but rather he now had his dog back and the dog now knew how to mate so the man once again had a future.

reply

I think you got that right. Once bombon's libido came back (if it ever was gone), Villegas realized that their future was wide open, as the never ending landscape at the end of the movie.

reply

I think libido ( once pointed in the movie in a very humorous way) had nothing to do with Bombon's dick :D ! Le Chien just wanted a black one when they always offered him whites...

i loved that part of the movie.
he wouldn't 'perform' when he was being forced to, he just did it when the time was right and he wanted to.
did anyone else feel sick watching the training of the dogs? those photos of the dogs that had been ripped open and the way they encouraged the dogs to be agressive really angered me. i also hated the part where they put him into the cage and into the luggage compartment under the bus - it was an omen of things to come for the man; the way that he stood there afterwards watching the road, like he knew he'd done the wrong thing by letting the guy look after him.
i got the feeling that at the end of the film the guy doesn't put him back into training (the dog obviously didn't enjoy being there - the way that he bit the guys hand and wouldn't perform) I think he's accepted him as a companion and won't put him back into that competitive, patriarchal environment - i can imagine him and the dog sitting on the back deck with a glass of red wine enjoying their retirement together =)
did anyone else think that?

The Dogos are still aptitude tested (? right term? they are tested for their gameness with boars) if they do well in the shows and they are to be used for breeding. If the dog is not game, it should not breed, so they are encouraged - trained, if you will - to be aggressive with the prey.

Yes, I think the locking down in the luggage compartment was symbolic. It was dark, confined and insecure just as the future of the man himself.

Juan came to understand the value of the dog's companionship when he talked with that singer lady in the restaurant. The woman tells about her dog back in Buenos Aires, and she tells that we only understand the deepness of our love after the loved one is gone. Juan feels the need to go and search for Lechien, or Bombon, again and he is happy when he finds him. Future does look more serene and harmonious for the two of them.

I disagree. For me, perhaps the most important aspect of this film is that it does not judge. When Villegas and Donado first bring Lechien to the dog fanciers, and Villegas gets bitten, the hunters come across as a sympathetic fraternity; there must be a half dozen reassuring comments; there is no hint of a "competitive, patriarchal environment". The bloody photos were upsetting to me too, but they told me that the bank manager was proud that the dog could survive after such a wound.

I just saw this movie yesterday in NYC and absolutely loved it. It had a great storyline that moved along at a very nice pace, not too fast, not too slow. I thought it was well cast.

FYI, I'm not really a pet person, but I loved this movie nonetheless.

Just rented this movie yesterdar. Found it wonderful. Great natural acting, reminding me -yep I know! I know!- italian neo-realism. An actor who had been chosen in the streets, literally. Beautiful photography. Kind of film you would not mind to see again and again.

I agree with most other replies, that lechien was able to relax and enjoy the 'company' of a wild dog. I got the feeling that the man missed the dog and was happy about their future together. Ahhh!

Just what we need - a film selling the myth that there is a fortune to be made from breeding dogs and that any village idiot can make his living driving around breeding more dogs.

In the film Walter Donaldo said "there are 80 million dogs in the USA" he should have added "and they put down 6-8 million dogs and cats each year"

I agree with you coffee90, but it was still a good movie
