Does a weak economy encourage dog shows?

Donado makes an interesting comment about the poor economy, to which he seems to attribute the popularity of dog shows. This fits with the theme of emasculation. Though Donado participates, he finds it distasteful and decadent. He himself is a bull of a man with too much machismo for his own good. Is it too much to extend the symbol of castration to include Argentina itself?

I wouldn't imagine the economy has much bearing on dog shows

In Bruges 9/10

You'd imagine that in a poor economy, escapism is more important than ever. The pride of possessing a healthy and aesthetically pleasing dog, combined with the prospect of prize money and social standing in the dog owner community could be hugely important to anyone struggling under the conditions presented in the film

The OP makes good and interesting points that I hadn't thought of but the film does emphasis the lack of employment prospects for Juan and those around him and does so for a reason.

what a season
to be beautiful
without a reason
