Is 'El Perro' suitable for children?

I can't find any suitability ratings on "El Perro." It sounds as though it would be all right for an 11-year-old child, but I don't want to be surprised.

Anybody have any comments on the suitability issue?

I've just finished it and I found it to be sweet and uplifting. There is nothing to frighten or upset children but i wonder if they will be able to follow a story on subtitles (if you are english speaking) and it is quite a slow moving story.

---------------- MILD SPOILER --------------------

As part of the story, they attempt to make the dog
mate. To some people, this could be a normal scene,
while others may not want to have to explain it to
young children.

Otherwise, there are no scenes that would be shocking
or frightening. Unlike 99% of man-and-dog films, this
one was not meant for the young, as already written
in the previous posts.

If are you talking about the Dogo Argentino being suitable for children the answer is yes of course, but this breed requires an experienced and dominant owner since despite Dogos have never done Dog-Fighting many of the breeds used to create it have, so Dogos (expecially male ones) can be really aggressive toward same sex dogs (like Pit Bull Terriers or American Bulldogs) if not properly socialized...Dogos should be always on a leash while walking in dog parks anyway to avoid fights with smaller dogs

I have just one comment, and it's one that's become a real bane to me. I've noticed that subtitles tend to use far, far worse language than the film itself uses. Several times now I've gone to show suitable films of my native Argentina to my kids (who don't speak Spanish) and been dismayed to find that the language in the subtitles is terrible. So you'd have what's a PG movie with M subtitles. Outrageous.

I agree. It's funny that when the translation goes in the other direction, the effect is the opposite. I remember a Hollywood movie being shown on a bus ride in Argentina (Santa Fe to Cordoba.) I was travelling with very young (back then) kids. The language in the movie was pretty bad. I kept thinking "whose idea was it to play a movie like this?" Turns out the movie (True Crime) IS rated R, for LANGUAGE. But then I started paying attention to the subtitles. The written Spanish was toned WAY down from the spoken English. So, without the audio track, it probably didn't deserve an R rating. But I agree with the observation about English subtitles. I've brought home movies from Argentina for the family to watch ONLY if the subtitles are turned off!

...better late than never I guess since you posted in 2006 and here it is 2008, but for my 2 cents, I think it would be a fine movie for kids over 10 or so, but a couple of scenes might concern parents: the low key mating scene at the very end (tho it's nothing done in as salacious a manner as something you might see on the Flavor of Love or Tina Tiquila) and also the banker's photos showing the gored dog's guts spilling out of its abdomen) used to show that these dogs have "heart". All in all, a very nice, low-key, heartwarming movie, showing interesting slice of life scenes and characters of rural Argentina.

I think it would be wonderful for most children.
Some explanations may be necessary. But it's a terrific film.

Much better than commercial cinema's fantasy exploitation or supernatural baloney.

Apart from the dog breeding scene, and a part where the guy tries to get his dog out of a car and it gives him a little bite on the hand (tiny bit of blood) , this film is ok for an 11 year old.

Both of these scene's are quite minor but I suppose they are the only things that could upset a sensitive/young child.

This is very belated, but thank you all for your helpful comments. My grandchildren and I did see the film, and it was perfectly lovely. They were able to read the subtitles just fine, though it was the first subtitled film they had seen.
