i really liked this movie, maybe even more than nueve reinas, but there's only one thing i couldn't get. was julio diana's brother? because, if he was, why was he living with her if she left home in the conditions that she described? that didn't make sense to me...

You are right about that. There is no explanation, and the boy is her brother.

The subtitles on the Dutch edition refer to him as Dietrich's son-in-law instead of brother-in-law, a mistranslation which confused me for a bit.
