I just watched it today and had to rewind that scene a few times and review it over and over (it is about one hour into the movie). That (wolf) dog's eyes were just so accusatory - it was as if the dog was a great actor and able to take and execute great direction from the director.
Granted, part of the overall feeling in that scene comes from the high-over-the-shoulder camera vantage point.
It was just incredible as to be almost spooky how that dog got the intent over non-verbally. More than just the eye(s), I think it also had to do with the subtle set of the jaw, jowls, eyebrows/forehead. The non-verbal communication and "knowing" is instantly recognizable and universal - but here, it's coming from a dog!
(Hey, "Klaatu" - your namesake ID is from one of my favorite films from the 50's, too!)
