Where is Tanner's Wife...Joanna Buckley?

I figured he was to get married to Joanna Buckley after the Democratic Convention in 1988. What happened? There is no mention of her throughout Tanner on Tanner.

Well, my friend, it's because Tanner (Michael Murphy--who is totally convincing and affable) and Buckley (Wendy Crewson--a total honey) never married.

On the Sundance airing of "Tanner '88" last fall, as well as on the Criterion Collection edition of "Tanner '88" on DVD, each of the eleven episodes were prefaced by new segments, set today, written by Garry Trudeau, and directed by Robert Altman. Before the first "Tanner" episode, its preface has Tanner saying that he is a bachelor today and that he is sort of untouchable in terms of adultery and politics inappropriately intermingling in the public eye, unlike Hart and Clinton, because he is instead single and unmarried.

Who knows what happened to Joanna Buckley. She was a bright, strong, sexy thing who really loved that flawed, yet engaging and "real" democrat, Jack Tanner. I don't know what became of her. I wish they would have alluded to her in "Tanner on Tanner."

If you haven't seen all of "Tanner '88", I highly recommend going out and buying it for yourself. It's frickin' underrated (although Altman won an Emmy for it), ahead-of-its-time masterpiece!

Interesting trivia, though: Michael Murphy and Wendy Crewson are married in real life.

Thanks! I've seen the whole Tanner 88 series and plan on getting the DVD ASAP.

I as thinking that because he was thinking as running in 88 as an "independent",
and she wanted him to back Dukakis, maybe this was what broke them apart....
