this movie had no identity

On the one hand it had many mythological creatures. It had men with superhuman unrealistic god-like stregth. It had scenes that appeared to have the "gods" intervene to save hercules. It even had a strong man who became much stronger when he put dirt on himself to imply he was gaining strength through hera. Yet it gave a message that the "gods" did not exist and that hercules was just a man, a very strong man. it made no sense. was this supposed to be a movie about the myth of hercules or a movie that was trying to say the myth of hercules is about a simple man who is really strong. If so then they put all the other mythological creatures in it? are we supposed to say that there really are not any gods yet then believe there a half human half horse like creatures running around? this was a movie with no sense of what it really was.
