Product Placement !!

It was annoying to see the "advertisments" of Western Union, Elf motor Oil etc.. Specially the scene when Amitabh was praising Western Union was so sad, an actor of his stature peddling so cheaply. That scene was just an add on in the movie and didnt add to anything at all. Similarly Sanjay Dutt with the motor Oil scene. Hard to swallow.

I agree--motor oil is very hard to swallow. : ) Actually, I agree with the comment. Especially the Elf Motor oil plug....complete with close-up of the bottle as he is pouring it.

I rememberd the ads on TV, for Nerolac where the paint's theme was played and assumed that it was done for the ad. I was surprised when I heard it in the theatre. Damn I mean, how much can you push.

Reebok, Calcium Sandoz Woman, the list goes on.

I know Amitji does a lot of advertising, but COME ON! It's an ABC production, true, but should the movie have about 8 products stuck in there.

And yes, the Elf Motor oil (esp Sanjay Babu pouring the oil in the motorcycle and the close up of it) oh man that was bad.

The movie would've been good even with the placements, but if the actors hadn't made a big deal to mention it. A good scene is in the beginning, where Amitji simply says, your calcium tablet, and the Calcium Sandoz Woman bottle is turned around with the recognizeable woman's face shape away from the camera. That was good because it alluded to the medicine without being an ad right in the movie.

Don't get me wrong. I loved Viruddh. It was a beautiful touching wonderful movie. I really loved it. -Omar

I agree. It should have been more subtle.

Yup....just took the words out of my mouth too.
But believe me this is not the only movie which shamelessly flaunts product endorsements, there are so many of them nowadays and I bet you all have seen them one time or the other.

reply

Well given the context of this movie, since the movie is very serious and deals with problems that are killing India, so i'm sure yash-raj banner and all the big bollywood brands wouldn't want to help support such a serious film. So i don't blame mr. Manjrekar for trying to help finance the moovie together, i guess the big companies though wanted him to advertise their products in the film!

They should've renamed the movie Viruddh... Product Placements come First.

@ raptors_man - If Mahesh Manjrekar was having trouble financing this film, he couldve left out the big names of Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, John Abraham, Sharmila Tagore etc. and put in lesser known yet good actors.

They turned this movie into a joke really, people should get to know abt this product placement curse so we can start boycotting the companies that indulge in such practices. I actually wanted to buy sandoz calcium tablets because I like their taste, but not anymore!!

Finally someone else noticed it!
I couldnt believe how many ads were placed!
Im crying over here and I hear
Amitabh say the actual medicine Sharmila needs to take.
Its like huh?
I think that s just pushing it.
Just say the generic name thank you very much.
Oh yeah Sanjay's endorsing that oil!
I thought he was goin to be beat up someone or crack a joke.
He is there pouring oil, saying the catchphrase
umm how does this move the story along?
Yeah i think the movie makers went a little overboard.
AMitabh doesnt have to endorse anything!
People will see this movie.
i dont know.
i thought it was uneccessary to place all those ads.
