I'm gonna put this down to bad subtitles and the fact that i was watching this at 2am yesterday night, but at the very start of the film, doesn't Tony's dad die?? My subtitles when we see him in the prison read something along the lines of... "one day they took me out and shot me in the head with an automatic... he returned nothing more than a bag of bones" . And if so, how does he talk to Tony about his wife and all later on?
Other than this confusion, awesome film. Captured the art of Murakami's writing perfectly with the piano in the background and narrator.

Yes, it was bad subtitles. It read something like "He got used to the fact that one day they might take him out and shoot him in the head with an automatic rifle." The 'bag of bones' referred to him having lost a lot of weight in prison.
