Endin of Dumplings

could someone pls explain the ending to me... I found it weird cuz the lady's wish was to become young again and also have a baby... Why did she decide killing her baby and eating it at the end... And when she performed an abortion to herself why did she start bleeding from her mouth? why did her tongue become so long and why did she lick the blood?

reply

I think she became more concerned with trying to become young than having a baby at that point. And I think her killing her own child and eating it was animalistic. So much so that she has a reptilian tongue. She looks human and all - young as she wished - but she has physical characteristics of an animal.

Any idea what the blood dripping from her mouth was in the tub? I thought maybe she'd poked too far (ugh) or someything when trying to kill it.

It was because she ate her child's fetus in the tub.

My heart hates uggos!

reply

Uh, maybe I was too freaked to pay any real attention to details... but, was that scene in the tub edited on the Comcast On Demand version? All I saw was the abortion, then the camera focused on her face where blood ended up dripping down and her freakishly Gene Simmons-like tongue came out. So I guess it was more of a subtle hint that she ate her fetus?

reply

No, Crapcastic didn't edit it, that's how the films rolls. Great directors don't want to give too much away so they cut out a lot of scenes to get you to think.

I never got the impression at all that she wanted a baby. Her main focus appeared to be regaining her husband's attention.

reply

Also, I think that she needed to undo, the damage (albeit mostly imaginary) that her body suffered from the "cursed" fetus, and eating her own child would be like the jackpot of potent young cells, her body wouldn't reject the cells that her own body made.

reply

Well, she did start to smell like fish, partially giving some reason as to why she would have certain aquatic qualities.

i think the user above me should've been aborted. give the guy a break, he wasn't asking for a lecture on back alley abortions. i'm sure he just wanted different interpretations.

reply

seriously, people need to stop being so condescending about film interpretation. it comes off as really pathetic.

reply

Strictly my interpretation:

First, 2 important points: When she ate that last child, she originally started to freak out because it was a "cursed" baby. Aunt Mei (Bai Ling) consoled her with the information that a cursed baby was the most potent kind. Also, when she first came in, Aunt Mei asked her either if she had or had tried to have a kid. When she said no, Aunt Mei implied not to worry because she would not only get her husband back but she would also be fertile.

So...When she decided to give herself an abortion, she probably felt as if her child was cursed too, as she had had it through unnatural means (i.e. she or her husband were sterile and it was probably the eating of DEAD FETUSES, that had made her that way). This combined with the fact that it was killed by it's own mother, would probably make it the most potent of all.

Already addressed: The blood coming from her mouth is that of the child that she ate. And I will go with the general assumption that the reptile tongue had to do with her increasing unnaturalness. Also, keep in mind that Aunt Mei is rather unnatural herself as she is 65 years old but looks 29, their may be something a little more evil at work than simply the canibilization (sic) of dead fetuses.

Ay, amor, eres mi luna, eres mi sol, eres mi pán de cada día.

reply

I think she ate her own child because she was desperate to look younger (i.e. the theme of the whole film) and she no lnoger had a supply of foetus dumplings as Aunt Mei had moved on after the police raid.

reply

Since when is stating the obvious "condescending"? Seriously, it's like people half way watch a movie then go on IMDB to get all the answers they didn't bother to look for.

zhe become Komodo Reptile.

You do realize the whole film is anti abortion, right? It's about how people become so obsessed with themselves and their youth that they lose all respect for human life.

By the end, the woman doesn't give a damn about babies at all. They're just meat. And she knows that if she has a child, it will make her fatter and older and unable to act young anymore. So she kills it so she can stay youthful, and by this point she doesn't even care or feel any repulsion at all, just like modern society doesn't.

It was pretty obvious.

Keep your right-wing politics out of this please, thanks retard.

reply

It was an analysis, a$$wipe! Why don't you keep your murder advocating, empty soul off of IMDB.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

reply

I didn't advocate anything. Go suck an egg idiot.

reply

Yes. You did and you do. Move to France.

I don't love her.. She kicked me in the face!!

reply

I'd love to live in france. I visit it at least once a year. Beautiful country.

reply

Stay there, then. You'll be right at home.

Maybe I'm completely off (I just watched this for the first time) but my impression was that perhaps it was part of the payment of being young? If the customers become pregnant they have to offer up the fetus to keep the woman's business going?
Sort of like in fairy tales (Rumpelstiltskin) you get your immediate desires fulfilled but you have to pay more of a price later.
Again, I could be completely off.
