This has been discussed before on this board, but I'm too lazy to go dig up the thread, so here goes off the top of my head:
Hugh Laurie--known as a comedian in the UK, then did House in the US (Not a movie, but still a very serious role...)
Adam Sandler--Click (has funny elements but makes me cry almost every time); Reign Over Me; Punch Drunk Love
Robin Williams--Dead Poets Society; Good Will Hunting (He has done a TON more of dramatic roles, but I can't think of them right now. Some, at least to me, were hits, and some were misses.)
Jim Carrey--The Truman Show. Ooh and Eternal Sunshine was ace. Great film!
Steve Carrell--Dan in Real Life (A bit slow in the pacing in some spots, but still a sweet film.)
Eddie Murphy--Dream Girls
Whoopi Goldberg--The Color Purple
Also, back in the day, Tom Hanks was regarded as only comedic actor. Look at him now...
Thanks all! I saw Number 23 an Lost in Translation as well, good movies too. Another one I might see is prince of persia, just becuase I haven't seen Jake gyllenhaal in an action movie.
