Great movie but dissatisfied
I liked the movie a lot.
But it is definitionally impossible for an author to interact with the fictional characters she creates. Just as it is impossible for people to interact both with the author and her fictional characters.
Yes, the moment when the author first interacts with her protagonist is kind of neat, but I was thinking the whole time: this is not happening.
It is hard for me to suspend belief at such a flagrant impossibility.
Other movies that evoked the same kind of response in me:
1. Sunset Boulevard. Dead people cannot narrate films to the living.
2. Fight Club. People cannot have two consciousnesses simultaneously.
3. Nightmare On Elm Street. Your imagination cannot do you bodily harm. I found this premise so ridiculous that I stopped watching early on.
This is not the same as movies with monsters and such. In theory, it is possible for monsters and other fantasy characters to exist. But it is as impossible for an author to interact with her fictional characters as it is for 1 plus 1 to equal 3.
