The rowing

Are there any rowers on this board that have seen this movie? If so, how much rowing is in it and how is the rowing in it? I was just browsing IMDB when I saw the words "crew" in this movies summary and I row for Penn State so naturally I was interested. Thanks in advance.

Yes--and when we see the rowing, will it be the actors rowing or stand (sit) ins? We have a terrible time with baseball movies in America--because you have to show the batter up close, swinging. Gary Cooper ("Pride of the Yankees") is generally considered the worst movie actor to ever swing a bat, and Robert Redford ("The Natural") the best--which is not to say either movie was good or bad.

They'd probably have to go with stand-ins unless the actors themselves are rowers. Rowing isn't really something that you can just pick up the week before shooting.

reply

There's interviews online where they said that they did intensive training for almost 1 or 2 months before shooting and got help from the real queerschlag team, so i would have to say, they did it themselves, now whether it was decent rowing or not is another issue

I know I am foolish but :

" Row row row your boat,
Gently down the stream,
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is such a dream ! "

first a want to apology for my bad english, i'm from austria *g*
i'm a rower and the actors can't row. above all the boats which they are using for rowing, are very old and they were no "race" boats. as a rower i'm ashamed for this film, because this film has nothing to do with rowing. ok, maybe a little bit, but nothing more.

reply

er..nice song, Randy. As a non-rower, I can say that up close, the actors did the rowing, and at a distance, real rowers proably did, although i wasn't as sure about the Queerschlag team. Mybe they did their own. Not racing boats?
Now that's a shame...to continue a bit about gARY cOOPER AND "pRIDE OF THE Yankees": He was so awful batting (he's supposed to be Lou Gehrig), that the director arranged for him to hit from the other sidse of the plate (hee...)--his natural side (and then reverse the film--very fancy for 1939)--and--he wasn't any better!

Perhaps more important--though I was personally satisfied with the acting--are the actors well-known in Germany (Austria)?

yes, as a non-rower you can say the actors weren't very bad. but as a real rower like me, i say they were very bad. if you are a real rower, start by regattas and you see this film you aren't very happy about it. because it has not very much to do with rowing. the row in boats and this was it. look on www.fisa.org. is the official rowing side, there you can see what rowing is. the film was a flop in germany and in austria. and all my rowing friends didn't like this film. perhaps we didn't like it because we all know what it mean to be a rower and in the reallity it's not so easy to win a game. the actors aren't really known in austria or in germany.
and trust me i know very much about rowing, all of my family are rowers except of my younger brother. but my english is very bad, sorry *lol*

reply

Your English is pretty good. Why didn't they like the film in germany and Austria? I mean, BESIDES the rowing? I thought it was better than most films.

you are jooking *g* for nothing a haven't go a D in english, but i try my best.
there are many reasons why the film was so bad in germany and austria.
first, there wasn't much publicity for the film, actual i think there was no publicity if i still remember.
second, this kind of film are very often shown in the tv. normaly 2-4 times a month and it's every time the same. the people had seen this too often.
third, the rowing idea wasnt't bad but the conversion wasn't really good.
fourth, it wasn't better than most film. the story is very simple, the rowing topic was neglect, for my favour it was too few and the actors aren't really known in austria and germany.
the austrian and german people like the usa film more *g*
special the usa series are very cool, like ER, 24, scrubs, nip tuck, the o.c., friends and many other series

I wouldn't really say the film flopped in Germany. Sure, it wasn't exactly a hit either, but based on expectations I'd say it did okay (it was the 20th most successful German film in 2004).

Robert Stadlober is pretty well known in Germany.

A friend of mine studied in Germany last year and rowed for a club there. The boats they use in the movie are representative of the German system, where rowers slowly graduate from old wooden "tubs" to the sleeker racing shells. I was surprized to even see Croker oars being used rather than the traditional wooden spoons.

That said, the rowing wasn't spectacular, with the "race" at the end being at least ten beats lower than it would be in reality. You have to remember that this isn't a movie about rowing, but about growing up and discovering yourself. Crew was simply a convenient backdrop for the film.

One of the subplots of the film was Schorshi's father's company was going to buy the club new boats if they won the race. Perhaps the director chose to use obsolete boats, instead of sleeker, newer shells to help propel that storyline...
