Similar movies?

Can anyone propose other movies with a similar theme, i.e. other gay coming-out films?

There are heaps... I'll write a quick list of the best ones I've seen

Beautiful Thing
Get Real
Balls (Another German one)
Latterdays

Most gay films are about coming out or coming to terms with someones sexuality.. If you would like a list of a few more good ones but not dealing with people quite so young... let me know.

Oh, this is one is pretty good: Just A Question of Love

Someone has to die in order that the rest of us should value life more. It's contrast.

reply

Should just say that for some reason the film "Just a question of love" is only registered in IMDB under its original title "Juste une question d'amour". But I agree that this is an excellent film, depicting the "second stage" of coming out, i.e. for parents. Sommersturm depicts the stage of accepting itself. The epilouge to Sommersturm shows clearly that the next challenge for Tobi is his parents: for Laurent in "Just a question of love" that is exactly the challenge he faces since he already has accepted his sexuality.

Hi there
Can you let me know a list of movies I can watch like Starcrossed?

Thanks

I would recommend Beautiful Thing, which Summer Storm reminded me a lot of (while also being very different), and you have to love the Mama Cass soundtrack...it fits so well...

Get Real is another British import, also worth checking out, in my opinion.

Someone mentioned Latter Days, that one was good too...adds the topic of religon to the mix...

There's also Edge of Seventeen, which was an interesting if slightly more realistic portrayal of coming out/coming of age...

Wikipedia has the most comprehensive list of gay-themed films, or films with gay characters, that I've found. Check it out . . . All the films mentioned by other posters are very good and worth seeing. For one of the few movies about gay teens who aren't struggling to come to terms with their sexuality, see Gregg Araki's Totally *beep* Up . . . it's about a group of gay teens in LA in the early 90s who are out and completely bored by gay culture . . . uneven, but worth seeing . . . .

I complain too much. That teacher don't like me. Now it's your turn.

Try "Nico and Dani", the English title for a Spanish film, "Krampack"
I liked it nearly as much as "Summer Storm"

"I am not a merry man." -Michael Dorn as Worf as Will Scarlet

OT - astroworf, I love your signature! ^^ you should include the "Captain, I protest!" part ^^

Sam and Dean Winchester
A Yaoi Fangirl's Dream Come True

There's a recent release that I think most Sommersturm fans will love -

'Shelter' (2007/II) is just out on dvd, and it's great.

To those who haven't yet seen 'Just a Question of Love'/'Juste Une Question d'Amour,' it's really worth checking out.

"Nothing personal. Your name just happened to come up."

reply

I agree with "leftbanker". Shelter is AMAZING...I no joke watched it about 16 or 17 time in ONE WEEK or so alone...but GREAT movie.

Sorry about the YELLING...lol

reply

I agree. I immediately thought of Shelter as well as Come Undone while watching Summer Storm. About SS (no pun intended)and most other coming of age gay movies: Why is it that the first time the main character discovers he's gay there's usually alcohol or pot involved? I'm not being a prude but I'm tired of this plot device so, that said, I was glad Tobi wasnt drunk or high on the raft when he finally got jiggy with it. I guess that's why after all these years Beautiful Thing is still a favorite because it wasnt as cliche. They lived in a project for cryin' out loud.

My recommendations for "coming out movies": Shelter, Edge of Seventeen, Beautiful Thing, Brokeback Mountain, But I'm a Cheerleader, C.R.A.Z.Y. (best foreign film Oscar nominee from Canada), Camp, Chuck & Buck, Come Undone, Doing Time on Maple Drive (not a comedy but has an early Jim Carrey performance), Get Real, Gypsy 83, Stonewall, Sugar, Wild Reeds

Other excellent non-teen oriented gay films are: Maurice(a young Hugh Grant), The Sum of Us (early Russell Crowe), Adventures of Priscilla, Velvet Goldmine (early Ewen McGregor & Jon Rhys-Meyers), The Opposite of Sex, Maybe...Maybe Not (also German), Trick, Urbania, Mysterious Skin, Stonewall, My Own Private Idaho, My Beautiful Landrette, Mala Noche, Love & Death on Long Island, I Think I Do, Another Gay Movie (avoid the sequel), Eating Out 1&2, Edward II (cameo by Annie Lennox), The Birdcage (and La Cage Aux Folles), Psycho Beach Party, Die Mommie Die, Head On, Boy Culture, The Object of My Affection and A Home at the End of the World.

I tried to avoid older gay movies like The Boys in the Band and movies about drag cuz they have a whole other set of issues going on.

Monsters...monsters from the ID!!!

i agree with elgatony...a home at the end of the world was an excellent movie. I just watched "make the yuletide gay" and it was a pretty cute movie that has it's good moments.

@Phfatts
I did the same thing! I was watching it every day before going to sleep for about a week...

My personal favorite in this sub-genre is Nico and Dani... A really cool movie about a gay/straight friendship in Spain. Another excellent movie (though a bit awkwardly adapted to the screen) is Lilies, a film that won the Genie award (Canadian equivalent of the Oscar). Technically it's not a teen film, but more than half of it is in flashbacks exploring what happened when the characters were teens.

I haven't seen Beautiful Thing yet, but from what others have said, will have to put that on my list.

One I just saw is called Plan B. It was so brilliant! I happen to enjoy stories that slowly unfold and it is definitely one of them. The subtlety and nuance that both male actors play their parts with is fantastic. Every look, every expression tells so much.

Some might consider it rather quiet and slow-moving but to me, that quality just made the relationship between the men simmer wonderfully as the movie progressed. Definitely check out Plan B!

reply

I agree! Plan B is awesome but requires patient viewing. Equally challenging-- but just as rewarding-- is the director's later film, Hawaii, which is only obliquely related to that American state and which has all the poignant charm of Plan B. Both films deal with the angst of coming out as experienced by "older" (i.e. 30-something) men.
