Why did Katie's mom confessed to Ellie that she

killed Katie's baby? Wouldn't it be safer for her to keep it to herself, I mean how could she be sure that Ellie wouldn't tell the truth, she's a lawyer... I guess it's only for us the audience.
Also what was this knife? Obviously it's not the murder weapon as the doctor said that the baby was suffocated and not stabbed, and the umbilical cord was cut with scisors...
And do you think that Katie knows that her mother killed her baby? I thought she doesn't know but right in the end there was something about the way she looked at Ellie that suggested me othewise.
I'm very interested to hear your opinions.

All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain.

reply

It wasn't a knife...

They were shears

reply

They were the scisors used to cut the chord I would imagine.

reply

Yes, they were the scissors used to cut the cord. They were incriminating evidence because they had Katie's and her mother's fingerprints on them.

reply

I guess she just wanted to get it off her chest? She didn't want to lie by omission anymore?

reply

Did she actually kill the baby or did she just hide it after it had died from the bacteria disease?

Who IS this girl?www.youtube.com/skyesweetnamvideo

reply

Not sure about the shears... as a member of the family/farm, the mom would have fingerprints on them anyway, so it wouldn't be incriminating...

I think she told Ellie because (based on the movie, not any real study of the community) the Amish believe that you can only repent for sins and get forgiven if you admit to them. In her eyes, she couldn't carry the secret, but once she told Ellie, she could pray about it, etc, and eventually be forgiven in the eyes of God. This was also why Katie admitted to the church elders that she had sex - they weren't happy about it, but they would eventually look past it.

I really don't think Katie's mother killed the baby. Like what they proved in court, it died of a bacteria disease from unpasteurized milk. I think that Katie's mom hid the baby after it died. But one thing I don't understand about an obviously loving mother like Katie's mom was, why did she let her daughter go through all that crap when she knew what had happened. I mean, there was a chance her daughter could have gone to prison, but instead she was put on probation and couldn't leave her farm. I know she told Ellie that the reason she did it was because she didn't want to lose another child, meaning that if the church Elder's found out, they might have ex-communicated her or her father would have banned her from the family. But what's worse, her daughter being banned from the family or going to prison. At least if she was banned, then her mother could still freely see her and hug her in person and not through bars or plate glass windows or what not.
But again, even though that ending was really creepy, I highly doubt Katie's mom would have killed her own grandchild, even if she didn't want to lose Katie.

She didn't kill the baby, but she did hide it, presumably to keep anyone from finding out her unmarried daughter had a baby.

Honesty is the best policy, but insanity is a better defense.

reply

OMG people READ THE BOOK! Sarah DID kill the baby, not Katie.

reply

But in the movie Sarah did not kill the baby. It died from the unpasteurized milk.
