Connections seemed half-baked (spoilers)

Overall, I liked this film quite a bit; the camera work, story themes and acting were quite good. However, I have a problem with some of the 'common characters' used in the segments. Some of the connections seemed superfluous to me; they weren't strong enough to require the use of similar characters. For example, the fact that the man was the prison guard and then the abused woman's father wasn't really a factor for anything except not needing to hire another actor for the second scene. And the fact that Amy Benemann's mother shows up as the nurse in another scene, the woman is the wife of the sterile husband in the supermarket (yes, i know that there is a glance when they here the story about the abortion, but it didn't really add anything to the overall story)...

I guess I am wondering if this would have worked better as 9 distinctly different short films sharing a common theme.

Just my thoughts.

well in some respects it allowed us to veiw some o the minor and keys characters other sides, like the prison guard who is unsympathetic and tuff with Sandra also has his problems of his own with his abused daughter. And his messed-up daughter is shown in the hospital as a nurse showing compassion to someone else. And the mom who laughs at a funeral saves lives at the hospital. i think your right and that they didn't really serve a purpose as a connector from segment to segment, but it did flesh out some of the performances and add a bit more intrigue into the film.

What I took from it was it just allowed you to see more dimensions of these characters. When we first saw the abused woman, she was a disaster - who might have killed herself, and did it really matter to anyone? Then you see her as a compassionate nurse, and you realize, yes, she does have a purpose in this life. I think it also added to the whole "small world" concept, where we are all connected somehow - many times in very strange ways. It just brought a realism to it all. That's what I think, anyway.

Lives intertwine. Whether you like it or not. If you make a film where you get a peek into people's lives, it adds to the realism to find that there are accidental overlaps.

To me, it is a relief to finally see a film like this where the connections are not the main point. This movie is not a puzzle to solve. This movie is a brief look into some lives. You can learn an awful lot of each of these lives, simply by witnessing one key scene. If you are looking for more meaning based on the connections, you're probably watching the wrong movie. The connections just are....
