I don't think it was presented clearly in the movie as to whether or not Mr. Woodcock was in fact a just and righteous person. I noticed he never really did anything too terrible, that it was blown out of proportion. I think he had good intentions towards the kids he taught

Woodcock was not a bad person, just impatient. He acted somewhat like a drill sergeant with his students, including the elderly swim class. When John met Woodcock's father, I was surprised that he didn't immediately connect to where it all came from.
