Some of You Are Mistaken..

Look,I've been looking around these boards and looking at the messages, and some people seem to say that the movie only showed what it was like to live with children with high-functioning autism. But I don't think you guys really get the point. The point that lies underneath the film is that is possible for anyone, even the mentally-ill,to do amazing things. This movie was to show that anyone who is "special" is just like anybody else, and that they are somehow capable of doing things that other people can. With all this talk about "Ohh but THEY had high functioning autism,so that's different",I feel like nobody got that through their heads.

I agree with you - except for the "mental illness" thing. Autism is not a mental illness; it is a developmental disability. (Maybe that's not what you were saying, but it sort of sounded like it.)

I thought this movie portrayed high functioning autism pretty well but I am still waiting for the movie about the average autistic child. Whenever I tell people that my brother is autistic many ask me what his special talents are thanks to movies like this one and Rainman. If there were more movies about the average autistic child with hyperactivity, minimal language/learning abilities, etc it would get a different sort of attention.

Totally!!! My brother is autistic as well. And I get the same questions all the time.

Rainman is for a much more mature audience, no? (I haven't seen this movie though.)

Anyhow, have you seen Tru Confessions http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0296251/?

I agree with you. The point isn't how autistic they are but the fact that they are and still had talents and could be like anyone else.

My moms best friends has a type of high functioning Autism, and he could always talk but this reminded me a lot of him. He's very, very smart and is always reciting commercial and things like that. I love this movie.
