4.5/10? A Reflection on the Perception of Real Marines?

I don't get it. I've watched this movie 9 times now and, though it isn't the greatest movie ever, it certainly deserves to be upwards of 7 on imdb. A great story, overblown sequences necessary in an action movie, an evident plot not always apparent in others, led by the charismatic John Cena who, despite his pansy-ass vocation, gives a good showing in his acting debut. Yet according to the imdb population, only worthy of a 4.5 rating?

Is this really a reflection of the movies merits, or a post-Iraq backlash driven by un-American, Hollywood-influenced morons?

Granted, imdb is not the be-all and end-all of a movie; ratings are subjective for the most part, less so perhaps on here where drives to push movies such as Manos: The Hands of Fate to the top 250 can lead to the manipulation of votes, but overall it serves as a dim reflection of the tastes and attitudes of the masses.

So I'm surprised a movie that at points reaches Terminator 2 greatness, while always maintaining an Under Seige 2: Dark Territory goodness, would merit such a pitiful rating. It's not as if a black is leading the cast, so that rules out racism-tinged voting; it's not made by Reiner, Allen, Spielberg or any of that lot; though it is fronted by a wrestler, wrestling, despite its pansy-assedness, remains extremely popular throughout the world, so a testosterone-fuelled backlash cannot be pointed to. The only valid reason, in my mind, is the widespread reaction from whiney liberals worldwide against the freeing of Iraq.

I fought in Iraq. I was there. I am an experienced Marine, having served 4 treacherous tours in many provinces in that dirty ass country. I am proud of my service, I did alot of good (carrying a kid whose legs had been shot off to the nearest hospital we hadn't blown up), some things I regret (shooting a kids legs off) and met an array of brave and brilliant souls (my commander Pat Fitzgerald, in particular, who in his write-up saved me from being court-martialled by insisting it was an Iraqi who effectively amputated the marine's legs). I would not hesitate to serve my country again, and if it be the case, die for the flag I hold dear to my heart. John Triton is the same.

So why are these hippy ass douchebags venting their frustration at the actions of us heroes (I hate to label myself as one, but in reality, every damn one of us are) by slating a movie that beautifully captures what it means to be a warrior? I'm fighting for you long-haired bastards. Men are dying for you. I would enter battle tomorrow to maintain your right to freedom, so why don't you quit your whining and shut up, and actually watch the damn movie free of prejudice and douchebaggery?

Goddamn makes me sick y'all.

Wow, that sure was a lot of nonsense. You put entirely too much thought into this. The movie got terrible scores because its a terrible movie. There's nothing more to it than that.

Wait, this is probably a joke post. But just in case it isn't, my point stands.

Silencio...

Perhaps you and your fellow liberal elite that reviewed it didn't put enough thought into it? Joke post? Dude, *beep* you. I'm a marine not a comedian.

dude i'm liberal and i LOVED the movie. I HATE the military with a passion and i LOVED the movie... some people just have different opinions, and might NOT like the movie NOT because they look down upon you, because you chose to probably get yourself killed in a foreign country we have NO business in (yeah kill Saddam (at the time of course)) but don't pretty much stay there! But again just because they didn't vote the movie a 7 or higher DOESN'T BY ANY MEANS OF THE WORD MEAN THEY ARE ANTI MILITARY OR ANTI MARINE! How you came up with that i have no idea, but you need to think 1st and not think that just because people think a movie based around a marine dislike it because its based marine... Heck maybe they just don't like the actor/wrestler John Cena.. Did you NOT think of that?

Unlike some people here, I actually watched this movie with an open mind and enjoyed it, and liked it. Even when I first watched it, I thought "Yeah, this isn't the greatest action film, but I can't help but like it.". More power to people who don't like it, but I thought that movie was still rather entertaining.

I can't agree with you about this movie. I couldn't [f]ucking stand it. I hated it because it was called The Marine and he was supposed to be one. His portrayal was so incredibly awful that it hurt me inside. I suppose that if I watched again I'd probably be able to let it go and watch it for what it is (a [s]hitty action flick), but on my first (and only so far) time I just got pissed off. I don't think it deserves upwards of a 7. I also don't think it's backlash from hippy liberal douchebags. There might be some of that, but I don't think it had a very big effect on the rating if it was there. It just sucked. Big time. I'll try and watch it again and get back to you (if you respond) on whether or not I could set aside my real feelings for it. Normally I can on my first try. For some reason I just couldn't this time.

The following is a genuine response from a hippy liberal douche bag:

First, let me thank you for calling me such clever names. It's a pleasure to know that I am a hippy and a liberal. Whether I am a douche bag is still under debate.

Secondly, I must say that this movie is horrible. As one person before me said, it was just conservative propaganda made by a company that's target audience is a bunch of extremists who believe the only way to enforce peace is to shoot first and ask questions later.

Thirdly, the acting was just terrible. That in itself is a good reason for a 4.5. I can easily say that, beyond the blatant political message that the right-winged makers of this film were forcing among their audience, this movie would have gotten the low rating anyway. As I type, I'm watching an annoying scene from this movie in which a really bad acting cop is approaching the bad guy (the only good part of this movie...I loved his performance in Terminator 2) and talking to him about his Vegas bumper sticker. Simply deplorable.

Fourth, I understand that you love the Marines, since you were one. However, I also can't understand how you could have walked away from this movie and felt like it did you proud. Seriously, to me, it would have felt like a mockery of all my skills and experiences. The opening scene is enough to offend even the most conservative of my friends.

This post will self-destruct...

"in the core"? You know, if you're going to troll, if helps if you know it's the Marine Corps, not the Marine Core.

Personally I liked this movie. It had a lot of explosions and humor. In which to me makes a good action film. Action movies are not meant to be realistic. They are just suppose to be action packed and draw money. Did I mention it was a movie? John Cena is suppose to be invinceable. Just like Arnold was in every movie he was in. Basically...it's a movie. Unrealistic things happen in movies. Especially action movies.

I am sort of a Liberal. More in the middle of the road.

This movie is a bad one not because it is unrealistic (90% of action movies are), but because it has a bad script, bad directing, bad acting, bad fight scenes, bad car chases, and so on so forth.
If I was a marine, I would be very disappointed by this movie and angry that it should represent me before the world.

reply

the reason that it has a low rating is because it is terrible. frankly i think 4.5 is far to high

reply

It is a horrible film. So horrible that I'm sure Jerry Bruckheimer was behind it somehow.

I thought the movie was ok. But by your own thought process, American Sniper should also have a below 5 rating.
