4.5/10? A Reflection on the Perception of Real Marines?
I don't get it. I've watched this movie 9 times now and, though it isn't the greatest movie ever, it certainly deserves to be upwards of 7 on imdb. A great story, overblown sequences necessary in an action movie, an evident plot not always apparent in others, led by the charismatic John Cena who, despite his pansy-ass vocation, gives a good showing in his acting debut. Yet according to the imdb population, only worthy of a 4.5 rating?
Is this really a reflection of the movies merits, or a post-Iraq backlash driven by un-American, Hollywood-influenced morons?
Granted, imdb is not the be-all and end-all of a movie; ratings are subjective for the most part, less so perhaps on here where drives to push movies such as Manos: The Hands of Fate to the top 250 can lead to the manipulation of votes, but overall it serves as a dim reflection of the tastes and attitudes of the masses.
So I'm surprised a movie that at points reaches Terminator 2 greatness, while always maintaining an Under Seige 2: Dark Territory goodness, would merit such a pitiful rating. It's not as if a black is leading the cast, so that rules out racism-tinged voting; it's not made by Reiner, Allen, Spielberg or any of that lot; though it is fronted by a wrestler, wrestling, despite its pansy-assedness, remains extremely popular throughout the world, so a testosterone-fuelled backlash cannot be pointed to. The only valid reason, in my mind, is the widespread reaction from whiney liberals worldwide against the freeing of Iraq.
I fought in Iraq. I was there. I am an experienced Marine, having served 4 treacherous tours in many provinces in that dirty ass country. I am proud of my service, I did alot of good (carrying a kid whose legs had been shot off to the nearest hospital we hadn't blown up), some things I regret (shooting a kids legs off) and met an array of brave and brilliant souls (my commander Pat Fitzgerald, in particular, who in his write-up saved me from being court-martialled by insisting it was an Iraqi who effectively amputated the marine's legs). I would not hesitate to serve my country again, and if it be the case, die for the flag I hold dear to my heart. John Triton is the same.
So why are these hippy ass douchebags venting their frustration at the actions of us heroes (I hate to label myself as one, but in reality, every damn one of us are) by slating a movie that beautifully captures what it means to be a warrior? I'm fighting for you long-haired bastards. Men are dying for you. I would enter battle tomorrow to maintain your right to freedom, so why don't you quit your whining and shut up, and actually watch the damn movie free of prejudice and douchebaggery?
Goddamn makes me sick y'all.
