Why did Amir distance himself from Hassan..

after his attack by the kids?

reply

He felt a lot of shame because he did't help him back. He didn't understand why somebody had done some much for him and he felt terrible so that he couldnt face him

HEISENBERG WAS HERE.... (I think)

(yes it's a chemistry joke so sue me!)

I'm still torn as to whether it was guilt/shame or jealousy or maybe a mix of both. The scene in the beginning where Amir overhears his father more or less calling him a sissy and saying Hassan always has to come to his rescue sort of alludes to jealousy of Hassan.

Hassan was a constant reminder of Amir's failings. It's a product of his guilt about not helping Hassan when he was being attacked, and because he was always a bit insecure and jealous of Hassan. So he wanted to distance himself from Hassan and thought the best way to do that would be to try and make Hassan hate him and want to leave.

If Amir told baba about not defending Hassan, then baba would never forgive him, ever. It'll make him think that Amir is a coward as he thought.
