Is the book or the movie better?

Or rather, does the film do the novel justice? Because I often find that when I read a book that is later turned into a movie, the movie isn't as good. I have seen some excellent adaptations though and having fallen in love with the book already, I just want to know if the movie is worth seeing as well. Thank you.

I saw the movie first, and then read the book. I thought both were excellent. Obviously, there were some important scenes from the book, that were not included in the movie. However, I thought it was an excellent adaptation. The author, Khaled Hosseini, thought the movie stayed true to his novel.

The read the book and then watched the movie, and for me the book is definitely better. The movie is a good adaptation of the novel in that it stayed true to the storyline and didn't "butcher" it, but it didn't deliver near the emotional impact the book did.

It's still worth seeing though.

The book!! It gave more detail into Hassan, his mother and his wife. It was beautifully written, defiantly better than the adaptation

I read the book first and it is so much better. I actually truly disliked the movie. The book is an amazing portrayal of friendship, guilt, redemption, and how one decision can change your life. I know you can't include everything in the movie but I thought there were some major points that were left out and it left me being unable to connect with the characters. I will say that the boy who played Hassan was wonderful but the movie was a disappointment. The book was remarkable and I recommend reading that and staying away from the movie.

I think its definitely a movie that should be seen AFTER reading the book. (though i guess i wouldn't understand how it would feel to watch it without or before the book).

I really enjoyed the movie, especially the kite running. I was emotionally connected to the film but i think its because i already knew the background that comes from reading the book. Though i understand not everything can fit in a movie. But i think it should of been longer particularly at the end cause i think its vital for audiences to understand. Its a good summary but doesn't have the depth that the book carries.

Also the part about the graphic emotional parts, i agree only somewhat. Because when he was abused, it was described to the point that we understood what happened to him but not to make it.. particularly graphic in nature? i'm not sure how to explain it, maybe i'm wrong?

I'm surprised people still ask this question. 99.99999% of the time the book is always better than the movie.
To answer your question: Yes the book really was better than the movie.

The book was my all time favorite, the movie was okay.. I know that they can never attempt to adapt book into movie, but the movie ain't that bad. Where else on other hand, the book is a must read! It already become a classic!

The book was SO much better. You can't take a book with R-rated content and themes and put it into a PG-13 movie. I discussed the film with a friend who HADN'T read the book, and his first question was "Was Hassan getting spanked in that one scene?", referring to the scene were Hassan was raped.

The book is much more graphic, realistic, and has more defining themes and portrays the characters in a realistic light. This movie is literally made of cardboard.

For me, there is never a comparison between books and movies, just because a movie is one person's vision of how a book played out. When you read, you obviously imagine things in your own way (sometimes they align with a film, sometimes not).

I would say if you are a fan of the book, watch the movie. However, if you are so much a fan that you don't want to ruin your image of the book, don't watch it - if that makes sense.

My sentiments exactly. There's a chance one might think differently if he or she watched the movie first, then read the book... but I think in most cases, the book will be better simply because it's most inclusive and leaves a lot more to the imagination.

I think that the book is always better than the movie. It's normal that the movie must be shorter, but there are many things in the book that we didn't see in the movie. Example is Ali's leg, Hassan's mouth... If I made this movie, I would erase some scenes, and add some more important things...
