Wow you seriously didn't pay attention to any of this movie did you??

I've actually watched this movie nearly every day since it comes on four different HBO channels.

The character of Carter is not a d-bag.
Sure, his native tongue is sarcasm, but you can tell this guy has a lot of heart. He's a hopeless romantic, a good listener (the whole "huh" line in the movie was purely a joke on Meg Ryan's character, Sarah), a caring grandson, and an upholder of morality when it comes to Lucy (chooses to no longer "see her") and the Bully (chooses not to fight him, but to use his wit). Carter gives advice to those who need it when simultaneously, he is going through an emotional crisis over his recent loss with what he had imagined was love.

To call him a douchebag is to completely misread the character. This is a free-thinking character who doesn't fall into your everyday clique. An individual.

His feelings for Sarah were true, as they both knew love & loss. They were both emotional wrecks who resonated within each other.

When Carter kissed Lucy back, it was merely a rebounding reflex he felt for Sophia; the young girl who felt the world for him, or so she thought. Carter knew true in his heart that he didn't have feelings for Lucy. He just projected another fantasy onto her, when his true feelings were for Sarah.

Sarah, on the other hand, as she saw Carter & Lucy kiss, felt betrayed by another guy who leaves her for someone else; something she's had to deal with about her husband and his affair. She drew her own conclusions and forbade Carter to ever see her daughter again. Carter never made an excuse. He just apologized and left her the note.

And you call this guy a douchebag. The evidence is against you.

seriously...are u so smitten by the type of guys who pretend to be metrosexual by crying at sleepless in Seattle so that they can get a screw? god...

douchebags like these i can smell miles away not just as characters in movies.

reply

Hahahaha, well said!

You can't be serious.

reply

i'm a serious mister.

I agree he's not a douche. He doesn't go looking to seduce both of them. And he has that whole problem with projecting that explains it. I liked how you explained it :)

I really liked this movie and the characters in it.

reply

Thank you! A voice of reason.

reply

definitely not a douche, especially compared to that one supadouchebro at the party talkin about "you come to my hood" or whatever...plus, carter didn't kiss the daughter, she kissed him.

well, you don't spell it son, you eat it

He'd have to actually bang both chicks to be a genuine d-bag. But there is nothing between his legs. He just seems particularly feckless because the character is more feminine than even the teenage girls.

Completely disagree. He helped both Kristen Stewart's character and Meg Ryan's. He went out of his way to write Meg Ryan that letter that she really needed to read and to have (so she'd know someone wrote her an amazing letter).

He took care of his grandmother.

He was totally brilliant with Kristen's little sister who came along on their sort-of-date.

He also refused to see Kristen any more when he realized his relationship with her was inappropriate.

A bad person would not do this.
