Question about the end (spoilers) ...

... when 'Patrick' was taken off in the police truck, leaving Holly at the street corner watching ...

Was it meant to imply that he had failed in his mission to save her from the sad life she had, and she was once again lost & would inevitably end up back where she started?

The only thing I found a bit strange was why he suddenly started buying her lunch/noodles/Pepsi ... why would he do that - he didn't know anything about her at the beginning.
