I wonder what Baier's inspiration was for Loic's character

Was Loic supposed to be a real sort of person? An authentic character?
He apparently grew up on or spent time working on a farm, and was a bit slow-witted and not very well educated (in contrast to Marie).
But it seemed pretty far-fetched that he didn't even seem to know exactly who Hitler was. Are there people like that in Switzerland?
