How did Richard Know?

So I may have missed something. but if his brother was dead how did he know what had happened to him? Especially the specifics of who was involved.

Small town, word gets around and people talk. Dont forget Richard is some what of an unreliable narrator and what you see in flash backs is from his point of view, much like the idealised way he remembers his brother.

I think the film works better without the exposition. Richard would have known the basics and how Richard died. The flashbacks need not be Richard's "memories", they are those of the people who were there.

Richard doesn't need specifics to do what he does. He's driven as much by his guilt as his rage.
