hardcore punk/hardcore.

whats the difference? I thought hardcore punk was stuff like D.R.I, The Acussed, Sucicidal Tendencies etc and hardcore was Hatebreed, Throwdown, Irate etc but apparently what I thought was hardcore punk was hardcore and what I thought was hardcore was metalcore. Please explain.

bands like Hatebreed, Throwdown, Madball, Bury Your Dead, Irate etc were clearly inspired by hardcore and in some respects have a hardcore ethos, but their style of play is more similar to metalcore than hardcore. this is only a technicality and it is not inaccurate to label them as hardcore bands. however purists will say that modern hardcore retains a faster, looser more punk rock rythm of playing than the slower, chunkier heavier style of bands such as those listed above.

well then they are idiots that don't know the roots of what they are "interested" in. which i find can quite often be the case in hardcore today.

yea man. i totally agree

punk was for art school kids.
hardcore punk was when it became real. it involved politics and ideas instead of art fart.
dri & the accused= crossover
hatebreed & throwdown = dog5h1t

metalcore is so lame, its sad. its for the flakes who are too young to jock out over pennywise.

And plain old hardcore is noise without politics. And I mean that in a good way.

A lot of people will hate me for saying this, but it's just my opinion. By the way, I was a card-carrying member of the NYC hardcore scene from 1979-1983 - so that's where my perspective comes from.

Hardcore Punk is essentially fast, simple punk rock (sort of how Keith Morris describes it - economical songs that get right to the point and don't beat it to death).

Hardcore is really just a hybrid of what used to be called speed metal and alternative metal. It is essentially punk-influenced metal. Frankly, I don't really like the use of the term hardcore to describe this, because hardcore punk was a much wider and more diverse musical spectrum than what is called 'hardcore' today.

I disagree.

The bands calling themselves hardcore nowadays (playing bad metal) have virtually nothing in common with the NYHC scene of the early 80's.
That they call themselves hardcore, doesn't make them hardcore.

Hardcore was just shorthand for "hardcore punk"

alternative metal? speed metal?

You were on the scene in NYC until 1983 at A7, gildersleeves, CBGB, the Rock Hotel, etceteras

Would you use "speed metal" or "alternative metal" to describe all the New York bands that proudly proclaimed themselves "Hardcore"?
Bands such as...
Reagan Youth, *beep* Major Conflict, Urban Waste, Killer Instinct, No Thanks, Cause For Alarm, Ultra Violence, The Abused... just to name a few that you might have seen.
