Just saw The Alice

(caution: spoilers ahead)
Just saw it and must say, interesting movie. The ending leaves a lot left open, and I still want to know more!

A few very funny scences, favorite was when the athelete dies (yes I know, but it was still funny!). I can see how it had the makings for another Lindy Chamberlain or Joanne Lees. Very crazy: Man killed near Alice Springs during total eclipse, seemingly insane woman a suspect, Germans dressed as monks witness.

Very funny scene.

I must say I liked it. It's good to see some more Aussie movies around rather then the crappy American movies they usually show on our TV.

The ending did leave alot open. I just had an arguement with my mum over wether it was a mini series or not. she expected there to be something on the tape the girl had made of the man falling. I actually would have enjoyed a sequal or a mini to be made.

It was a fearly large cast. I'm suprised that there is nobody listed on IMDB. I would like to know who some of them where. Most of them seemed so familiar to me.

A few of the story lines appear to be taken from real life. The guy in the hotel who wrecks the pokie machine then drives his Mack truck through the hotel reminds me of an incident at Ayers Rock where a guy actually did drive a truck through the Chalet Inland hotel. Also the thing with the Germans was true. Great story and excellent way that all the characters came together for the eclipse.

Chrezz,
Like you, i enjoyed 'the Alice' movie. It had drama/comedy/romance.
Everything a woman needs! lmao
But I'm a huge fan of Erik Thomson since his days as Dr Mitch Stevens in the medical drama All Saints. So the fact he plays the lead male character, perhaps my view is somewhat biased.

The ending definitely left me wanting more.
Especially with Jack finally deciding to stay in the Alice with plans to start up a pub. (thanks to the sheep sleeping? lmao)
Would he be upfront with Jess & confess that he's her father?
& if he does, how will Jess react?
& Couldn't you just feel the chemistry building between Jack and Helen.
Will they get together? Or is it all just a big tease for us viewers?
And the sheer angst over the inquest into Helens husbands suspicious death?
Did she kill him? Or did he just trip over his own ego and fall?
Could there be evidence of murder on the film Jess took during the eclipse? or perhaps the proof that his death was accidental?
God? the angst has been killing me LOL.

The cast was indeed quite large. And a lot of the faces were familiar, as most of them have been on Aussie TV for quite some time.
Erik Thomson (All Saints, Pacific Drive, Xena warrior princess,Somersault) played the part of Jack Jaffers, the washed up rock star, and Caitlin McDougall? (Always Greener)She is Eriks wife in real life, and she plays the part of helen gregory, the woman trapped in a loveless marriage, whose husband fell off a cliff, while attempting a world record during the solar eclipse)
Andrew McFarlane who plays the local policeman (you may remember him from the Flying Doctors,PlaySchool,Neighbours, various Aussie tele-movies.)
Simon Burke plays the 'ghost' who is trying to pair Jack and Helen together. (remember him in Playschool, plus he's been in various musical theatre productions in Melb & Sydney.)
Jessica Napier who plays Jacks daughter Jess Daily (Always Greener,McClouds Daughters)

I agree that it's nice to have some home grown Aussie drama back on our screens. Im so sick & tired of US re-runs and all the reality crap.

Well, you got your wish. The ALice rated highly with Australian audiences, so its on as a 22 part series now. Monday nights. 7.30pm on ch9.

It was on tonight. SO I taped it.
I'm off to watch it right now.

Will jump back on this messageboard later, with my thoughts.

Bye for now.

I have just finished watching the mini-series and the first and only season on DVD. I actually thought it was a good story and can't understand why it was canned after only one season. Does anyone know? Considering what's on TV at the moment I found this very refreshing.

reply

Yeah... it wasnt all that bad was it? Compared to a lot of the rubbish that passes for entertainment on free to air television. If anything it was a little too corny. But there were some *excellent* episodes, and some rather good performances by our aussie actors. Overall, I enjoyed it and thought they should have given it a little longer to find an audience.
Who knows why some shows make it past the first season and others dont?
My only explanation is REALITY TV.
The TV stations are obsessed with it.

(spoilers)

I watched the movie about a month ago and was pleasantly suprised by it. I don't think I will ever get to watch the TV series though.

As others have posted the characters are quite amusing and well linked (the links were not obvious from the start but I did guess who the mother would be).

I would have thought that the guy who got off the train should have died in the desert but I guess he did know a little bit on how to survive out there.
