Cole vs Dr. Richardson ?

I just watched Supernova for the first time and I must have missed the cause of the conflict between Cole and Dr. Richardson. Why did Cole want to kill Richardson?

Though they were hiding in a closet, his wife and daughter saw him kill a couple of people and Cole had escaped. He also killed the doctor's maid and found out where they were hiding. He was protecting his family.
