What happened to the other escaped convict?

I had this movie on most of yesterday while I was working on various projects, but missed the part between Cole's escape and when he shows up as a stalker. There was a simple-minded convict who also escaped when their transport van overturned. I got the impression that he was probably a red shirt who would be offed by Cole when he had outlived his usefulness, but I missed his demise. What happened to him?
