She was great at the acting, but her American accent was just enough off to be noticeable , and that bothered me. Why didn't they get a real American to play the part instead of trying to copy the accent?-but they are always doing things like that in filmdom-[ Americans putting on fake British accents, etc-it usually doesn't work].

reply

I know what u mean, altho her american accent was better than most english people tryna do american accents. English Men in particular cannot do American accents. Jude Law, Ewan Mcgreggor, Daniel Craig. Decent actors, bad american accents.

The women can do it better, like kate Winslet, or cate blanchett (well she can do any accent)

When I first saw Emily Watson in Red Dragon I had no idea who she was and just assumed that she was American, so I guess I didn't notice any peculiarities in her accent. I want to see this movie simply because I like her now.

I thought Emily Watson was superb in this movie along with her American accent. She sounded like she was from the East Coast. I hear people talk like her all time, and especially from the Philadelphia area.

shadycady I am from the Philadelphia area and live an hour north of the area now. It is true there is a distinctive accent, sort of British but with a strongly-pronounced "R".

Hi. I was born and raised in Willingboro New Jersey. I can definitely hear the accent from the area, now that I have lived in N.C. for over 20 years.

Emily was superb, quite sexy in some scenes and really brings off the spirit of the character for me, as she's sympathetic Grant must have loved the real life version too

reply

Blanchett is Australian, excuse me! The british accent is fake, too. :-)

fair enough for daniel and ewan, but jude law is one of the best english actors when it comes to american accents.
he was spot on in both "cold mountain" and "the talented mr ripley". most actors fail miserably at southern american accents, but he nailed it, and his accent in "the talented mr ripley" was a difficult one because he played a man who hadn't lived in america for several years.

"they should give nicole kidman an oscar for being able to show any emotion after THAT much botox".

reply

Actually, thats true, his accent was perfect inn Mr Ripley

Christian Bale does a respectable American accent. It would have been difficult to pull off American Psycho if he didn't.

reply

actually, he does it so well that untill a couple of weeks ago i thought he was american.

Your right Emily is very cool, what a great performance and she does a very good American accent.

reply

I felt exactly the same way. Emily Watson was amazing as ruby.

reply

I agree, I totally love Emily Watson!

reply

Spoiler!!!!!

I'm watching this film right now and I cheered aloud when Emily's character comes back! She is brilliant!

reply

Emily Watson took the role on the condition that Richard's wife Joan, who is a dialogue coach, would work with her to get the American accent. This is according to his book the Wah-Wah Diaries (great read).

reply

I thought Emily Watson was American. I didn't realize she wasn't until I looked her up after I watched the movie. She did a fantastic job. I would have liked her to have had more screen time.

Driving?

Of course. Or what do you think I am talking about??

[Silent indignation.]

In your case, dear Squeeth, I won't forget to tell Emily Watson to cover her bellybutton, if she ever writes you an autograph or sits back in your car.

And please [with emphasis] don't get me started on the reckless driving of that Volvo Romeo.

reply

I don't have a motor any more but she can have a ride on my bicycle any day.

reply

I wish I had a Fahrrad in my garage too. (If I had a garage.) But sadly I can't allow myself such a progressive lifestyle any more, I'm not strong enough to go up and down all those steep barrancos by bicycle. I have to go by car like a backwater yokel.

(Even though, when I think about my driving style, I must admit that I would be faster by bicycle.)

Thank you for this advice. I have never thought about it. Maybe I shouldn't wear my plaits in front of my eyes.

Yes. L-i-c-e-n-c-e. Don't you need one in the UK? – I see. That explains why you drive on the wrong side of the street.

I drive on the side with the shade.
