Tom Waits

How much of the movie is Waits in? Is his music featured? I loved Benigni and Waits together in "Down By Law", and am a big fan of Waits' music, and wonder if he plays a big part or just a cameo...

Funny, ´cause it was one of the main reasons for me to watch the movie - the paticipation of Tom Waits. The movie starts out with a nice wedding scene, where Tom Waits is singing and playing piano (obviously to see though,it is playback!!!). The song is called "You can never hold back spring" and is like most of his songs written by his wife, Kathleen Brennan. The theme occurs in the background some times during the rest of the movie, but Tom Waits doesn´t do any acting.

A bit disapointing, but when this is said, please watch the movie - yes just watch it. Begnini is amazing in his little one-man-show, where Jean Reno fills out the rest. There is a good laughter during the whole film and a beautiful end... I gave it 9 stars for a superb little poem.

Hope that this can be some help to you.

Tom Waits definitely had a minor (non-existent) role, but the song he sings ("You can never hold back spring") is the foundation of the whole movie, and we hear it throughout the picture. In that respect, Tom was a big part of the movie.

I love the fact that Benigni, Tom Waits, Jim Jarmusch & a few others seem to hang around together, making cameo appearances in each others' films. If you guys are fans of them, you gotta see "Coffee & Cigarettes". Tom's scene (with Iggy Pop) is freakin hillllllarious. Benigni does a scene with Steven Wright... now there's a serious personality contrast.

Hi Rooprect!

Nice comment on coffee and cigarettes - one of my favorites. Unfortunately a lot of viewers don´t like it! I think COOL is the right word for the behavior of the different characters. Maybe it is important that you know their backgrounds before watching it?

Still I think that "Down by law" is the best cooperation between Benigni, Tom Waits and Jarmusch. Unbelieveable funny with Benigni and Waits as "roommates" im prison...

By the way, I just went to see your top/buttom 13 and it surprised me a lot to see Gotfather in your bottom list. Is there and specific reason for that. Any genre has its tops and flops, but within the gangster genre it is the best ever made due to my opinion! -Just courious, because you really do have some interesting and special stuff on your list. I like that. Caché and Manderlay were very dissapointing to me too, because the acting crew seemed very good, but the results...

Hiya jess, I haven't seen "Down by Law" yet, but now I'm really psyched to see it! I'm pretty sure there's a copy at my local video store.

I agree, it helps to know their backgrounds before watching a movie like Coffee & Cigarettes. At times the movie can seem like a big inside joke, and if you don't get it you'll feel left out. That's probably why so many people didn't like C&C.

But I just love those Tommy-Iggy lines. "The beauty of quitting is, now that I've quit, I can have one, 'cause I've quit." lmao

About Godfather...yeah, it really pained me to put it in the bottom 13 list because artistically it was brilliant (like Apocalypse Now which I also trashed). But if any film resorts to real-life animal killing/torture, it's a one way ticket to my trash pile. That decapitated horse scene featured a real (ex-)horse, just like Apocalypse Now featured a real (ex-)buffalo. In both cases I think Francis Ford Coppola could have used special effects/props/animatronics instead of a real living being. In fact, for years I thought those were fake animals until I decided to research it :(

Anyway, that's just my wacky opinion. Feel free to disagree!

Hey I just checked out your profile & vote history, and WOW, it looks like we have really similar taste in films...! Especially obscure, non-USA stuff. 37°2 le matin, Dom za vesanje (have you seen "Arizona Dream"?), the Benigni stuff, the Jarmusch stuff, Jeunet, Francis Veber... great stuff!! You need to make a "favourite films" list so I can pick out what to see next. I've sorta been in movie limbo for a few weeks. Tiger in the Snow was the first really good film I've seen in ages.
