Benigni trying to draw more water from the same well - spoiler

I was very disappointed in this film. It seemed to me that Benigni thought he could get more mileage out of the formula he used in LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL so he created a story that pulls similar emotional strings.

He manipulates the audience by not revealing Vittoria's real identity. Then he plays all his usual cards:

Roberto is so charming! He talks to animals! He makes children laugh!
Roberto can chatter endlessly, and make people in dangerous situations think everything is all right!
Beautiful women can't help but fall in love with Roberto!
Roberto is such a sad little clown...don't we all love him?
And he's Italian! As he clearly states at least 50 times!

The plot has huge holes and coincidences in it, but that's OK because Roberto is do darned cute! He just skips over the difficult parts of the plot to hop to the next cute Roberto moment. And when we finally realize the truth that he's been withholding from us the entire time, do we really care?

OK. You didn't like the movie. That is your opinion and it is valid. You don't have to like it.
However, as you stated in another thread as well, you claim you felt manipulated and that bothered you. Well, that is what is supposed to happen in a movie. I suppose you only like movies where everything is revealed to you at the beginning and you dont have to actually pay attention to get anything out of it. Movie makers ALL try and manipulate you in some way or another. Every one of them.

Plus, although it has many similarities to Life Is Beautiful, it was in no way a knockoff. The only way to believe that is you didn't actually pay attention to the movie, or went into it with that idea because it looked that way on the surface.

I also hate to tell you, but those cards are the ones he plays in ALL of his movies, not just Life Is Beautiful. That is his niche. That is why people pay to see his movies. No one wants to see Schwartzenegger play Hamlet either, so he doesn't do it.

Sure there are plot holes....the movie is a fantasy after all. Just because it had a real life backdrop does not mean it wasn't a fantastical love story. There were plenty of plot holes in Life is Beautiful as well. Show me movie with no plot holes at all and we'll have a first on our hands. It's always easy to find plot holes when yur looking for them. It's especially easy when the movie is not trying to cover them up.

Lastly, yes, we do care when he finally reveals the truth. Why? Because that is the point of the movie. Without that moment, the movie was a lot of the things you claim it was. That moment tied everything up and made all of his ridiculous actions make sense. If you didn't care, then you missed the point of the movie.
Maybe you didn't like the point of the movie, and that's fine. But it would be nice not to knock it for unsubstantiated reasons.

oh, and you forgot to mention coincidences or coinky dinks are the backbone of storytelling, especially in movies.
there's a reason why people easily run into their ex-husbands on the streets of new york city, because it's easier than writing a scene where they go out looking for the person, calling around trying to find them, ask to meet at starbucks on 51st street where there's a million starbucks, so which one do they meet at. they continually play phone tag until they finally meet up and say hi.
would you like to see that in a movie or this:
man walks down the street runs into his ex-wife and says, hi.

reply

My God!!! Is this guy for real?!?!?!

reply

still, I must have missed the point too, as I totally agrre with him.

also, I was disturbed by Benigni's action in the hospital: there were lots of people suffering, but he didn't care at all for them: his only care was for his woman and he felt the right to harass every doctor of the hospital in order to save her.

to me it was disturbing.

reply

Disturbing and yet....
are you sure you can say you would act any different if the same thing happened to you?

reply

He got heaps of medicines for others as well. Next time follow the film.
