To synchronise rollercoasters, the two stations have to be touching each other side by side to the synchrinise stations option will be enabled. Also, to keep splitting cars beside each other, you should make the two tracks exact as possible, mirror images of each other. And if you are really skilled, you can have them do completely different things and still stay beside each other.

I created a single-track (moebius loop) racing coaster; however, the train does not stop in the second station. I put the synchronise option on, but the train entering station 2 keeps going. How can I correct this?

Are you trying to make a rollercoaster where guests enter at one station and exit at the other?

Yes. But, the trains must leave at the same time. It's a single-track racing coaster. They start on one side and "end" on the other.

Oh, yeah those rollercoasters are hard to build. What you have to do, is make a very small difference right before the trains come into the station. Such as, if they turn into the other station, make one track dive under the other and make a larger turn and come up itno the station. And yeah, to synchronize the trains, the stations have to be touching.
