5.9 ??? how can anyone give it below 7?

Is it becouse some people thought it disgusting? or do they genuine think its a bad film?

reply

I thought it was an okay film.. but nothing more. So I gave it a 6.

reply

Arithmetic mean = 7.4. Median = 8

IMDb's rating system is pretty weird.

What was so bad about it?

Hello Johan,

Giving a movie a 1 is something that should happen incredibly rarely, as well as very high ratings. Voting a 1 for this movie, well more or less any movie almost, says quite a lot about your ability to perceive movies anywhere near fairly. Some future advice also, if you wish to be taken seriously: Use caps at the start of sentences. Use more than 3-5 words in each of your sentences. Finally, if you have nothing constructive to say, nothing should be said at all. It is very easy and very possible to give a constructive negative review about any film, even if one might actually loathe said film.

I have yet to see Princess, but Johan's post jumped in my face as being... well... rather silly.

reply

OK OK i'm sorry Ole.
I'm just a stupid danish idiot. i will behave myself and learn how to write.
I will try not to be a silly boy. have a nice day and a good evening.
see you soon. for a round of cricket.

The utmost thanks for the help - Johan

reply

i agree with most of what you said there. but there are many people who are taken seriously (and no reason why they shouldnt) who dont bother using caps to start a sentence. we're not writing formal letters or essays or anything "professional".
and before you say something about the lack of apostrophes and some other punctuative inconsistencies in my post - they dont matter. people still take me seriously :)

I gave it a 9. Thought it was an amazing movie, but was a little to caught up in it's crusade against the porn bizness at times. Still loved it tough, the whole movie had an very original feel to it.

So, why aren't we scared? Because we have guns? You could be right.

Hi - saw this movie a couple of days ago, I quite enjoyed it - marks out of 10? I'd probably give it a 7.2, or 72%. It looked beautiful but something abut the plot didn't quite gel together for me. I did like the movie, don't get me wrong, but it didn't feel particularly profound - I found it to be a slightly above average revenge story, which borrowed elements from both European and Japanese animation - and it's best to leave it at that, because I don't think that it said anything about the porn industry that hasn't been said better elsewhere before.

SPOILER ALERT!

I was also kind of unclear about how August died - was he somehow killed in the explosion, or did he kill himself?

reply

I gave him a 7 'cause I found it a real good movie and the message against the porn industry was also clear. But there are a few things I didn't like about it, like the way August keeps her away from sex, but shows her every kind of violence.

SPOILER ALERT
*************

August dies in the end 'cause he was shot before and he wasn't able to go to the hospital cause of the police.

reply

I just saw this, and I really didn't get it. I didn't really figure out what he was trying to say, and it seemed forced that he WAS trying to say something...
The dialogue and the performance of the voice actors was horible.
So, ok Morgenthaler is influenced by japanese culture and ie Tarantino and how he is influenced by japanese culture, namely Kill Bill. But does he have to use both similair plot elements and visual elements?! Especially the scene where there suddenly are lots of cherry trees, in what i thought up untill then was supposed to be Copenhagen, that was just so over the top.
I DID like the visual style and there were many beautiful parts. Somehow it just fell flat on its face. But I do have hopes for Morgenthaler making something interesting in the future perhaps.

Good movie untill the end ... for crying out loud :-(

I gave the film 8/10. 'Princess' is a wonderful revenge movie, just like the Kill Bills. I thought the end was really good and tragicall. A very uniquee and original movie. This movie is in my favourit top for sure, the movie got the same grade as the Kill Bill movies, Crash, The Prestige and so on.

I recommend this movie deeply. By the way, it was premier this evening in Sweden today and only me, my girlfriend and a creepy old guy saw the movie, bad!

reply

This was in my humble opinion not a good film. Can't remember, I think I gave it 4 for "nice try - better luck next time".

I didn't find it disgusting... I found it dull.

... And yes, I understood the movie perfectly - I'm not a moron.

reply

Gave it a 5. Liked its gritty style but found it flawed on several levels.

While it damages a young girl to grow up in such an envirement, doesnt it damage her experience violence? Its ridicoulus of August to take her along on his revenge missions.

Its kind of muddled. Directed at child porn or porn? The film makes it easier for itself by roling this into one.

Didnt care for the mixing between animated and filmed.

and loads more.

reply

maybe because this movie seems like it could be a propaganda film of radical christians? the message of the movie is against everything people have built over the last centuries (at least in western countries and to some extent) => a just, open-minded society. glorifying vigilante justice, even linking it to god - while some movies (take e.g. "the life of david gale") try to educate people, "princess" supports their hypocritical acts of prejudice.

i don't know what disugsted me more - the content of the movie or the fact that people were actually laughing about it.

oh and i won't even comment on that ridicolous portrait of an egoshooter fan...

the only part of the movie i liked was when august hit mia - because it showed the true nature of that "saint". as far as i recall he even promised twice that he wouldn't do something bad any more. AND he was the one who helped princess "find her way" in the first place. unfortunately, the criticism on hypocrisy wasn't carried through but even actually pretty much reversed with that ending.

reply

I'll have to argue in the other direction...
Thinking this is a "propaganda film of radical Christians" does to me imply that you did not grasp the subtlety of the message. I felt the whole point of the movie WAS that August himself was doing exactly what the others had done to Mia and that his mission of revenge was just as wrong. Him being a priest and moments where he talked to God only occur a few times in the whole movie.

If anything this movie condemns such religiously motivated acts of vigilantism most of all by having all 3 main characters dead at the end. August's sister is dead the whole movie; Mia is killed directly by his own bomb, and August himself dies from the gunshot wounds he sustains in the firefight at the Chinese restaurant (at least that's how I interpret his death).

In essence August is taking revenge on himself. He feels the guilt of what he's done or didn't do and hates himself, yet redirects that hate toward Charlie and Paradise Lust. The scene where we see the video of his sister at the party celebrating the first video, August is thanked for getting his sister started in the porn business. He hates himself for this as well as for not rescuing Mia from his sister and her lifestyle (the scene where August tries to take Mia but his sister threatens to kill her).

reply

if i didn't grasp the subtlety of the message (as you interpret it), i wouldn't have said "unfortunately, the criticism on hypocrisy wasn't carried through but even actually pretty much reversed with that ending."

the deaths of the 3 main characters is portrayed as something beautiful - they all meet up in what doesn't exactly seem like hell. they actually all seem pretty happy. so it has to be a good thing to sacrifice your life for the fight against pornography - it will secure you a place in heaven and you'll get to see all your loved ones there anyway. but that's just how i interpret it. i really would've loved being able to see it the way you did. but i suppose i actually thought more about it than you realized...

reply

It makes people realize that not every porn movie they wank to is nice - it unsettles them.
So they judge it bad - to feel good.

An infant getting raped unsettles you less than a priest getting angry over it?
Realizing where these people you masturbate to come from has nothing to do with religion.

Good thing it was a cartoon.

reply

Ya - because before I saw Princess, I thought all pr0n stars loved their job. Give me strength.

Stating that anybody who gave the movie a low mark must be a regular user of pr0n is probably the most ridiculous thing anybody has said so far on this thread. I went to see this film with my girlfriend, and she felt exactly the same way I did: it looked beautiful, had some decent voice actors - but failed in terms of plot coherence, and ultimately it was a movie that did not know the content of its own message. In fact, I think it's probably more realistic to suggest that all the people giving the movie high ratings are doing so out of their OWN feelings of guilt with regards to porn, and their (ab)use of it.

Comparisons with Kill Bill are reasonable: Kill Bill was a schlocky mish mash of themes and homages, which did not really work as a coherent whole - and ultimately ended up being cartoonish in its execution. Princess is a cartoon that wishes it was a movie, and suffers from similar problems with regards to its themes. It probably would have worked slightly better as a live-action piece, because the ambiguities of August's motivation might be easier to convey through the facial expressions and body language of a skilled actor. Even so, it would still fail to be great because the film's central conceit is woefully misguided - if, as some people have stated, the point of the film is to show that August is in many ways just as bad as the people who exploited Princess, then why would they include the final shot of them all together, as if that was somehow a happy, or at least cathartic, ending?

reply

first of all... where's the infant? i doubt mia is young enough to be called that. secondly, when was the rape? and thirdly - the priest didn't just get angry. that's the whole point of my argument.

reply

I think this movie is okay, nbut nothing too thrilling. The revenge thing is just too over th top and the ending is pretty disappointing. I just thought the animation was wonderful!
I just get a feeling they could've done more with this movie. I'm missing stuff.

reply

I'll give it a 2..it was pretty retarded

reply

I gave it a 6, because though it was emotionally draining, it had an incredibly unrealistic and almost ridiculous story.
And the only film I ever gave a 1 was August Underground's Mordum. Watch it, you'll see what I mean - anything else at least had something remotely good about it.
