About spirit guides

I have been playing this game over and over again, and every time I play, I ALWAYS get the damn water spirit. Don't get me wrong. I like water, but every time?!

I've been researching, and everybody says that the selection of spirit guides is random, but if that's true why do I keep getting the water spirit and none of the other two? I get a different combination for the door to the old memory chamber from Spire every time I play, but I can't get a different spirit guide each time? What's wrong with that picture?

Either the process was never random in the first place or it's random in that each released copy of the game was randomly assigned a different spirit guide that never changes. Can anybody confirm this? Has anybody played and gotten multiple spirit guides?

I have played Myst: Revelation twice and at first I had Wind Spirit Guide. Second time I played, I got the Water Spirit Guide, but I hadn't figured out what affects this change.

I think it depends of how much you have used the game help. If you don't use it, you get the water spirit. Try use it many times and you will need a diferent spirit.

I don't know. i never used the game help and i keep getting the wind spirit. 5 times now.

After I got to Sin City, all the color came back.

I believe (this is a guess, though it does have basis in fact) it has to do both with time taken on puzzles, and number of times you consult help. I've played it through three times, the first two times without consulting the in game hints. The first time, however, I completed it with major delays (that blasted monkey puzzle, and sorting out the ancestors in Dream, not to mention the vibrating bars in Spire, and accidentally leaving the game on when I fell asleep at the keyboard) and I was a child of Water. The next time through I completed it with no major delays, and I was a child of Wind. The last time through I was trying for Child of Fire, and I consulted the in game help at several points. I must not have done it enough, as I was still a child of Water. I think you have to consult the help on nearly every puzzle, but I'm still not sure. Looks like I'm in for a fourth go around if I ever want to get Child of Fire.

Peace.

There's an option to get hints on the puzzles if you're having problems figuring out what to do. You can choose to get really vague hints that mainly help nudge you in the right direction, or you can get step-by-step instructions on how to solve a puzzle.

Many factors ...
If you play the game very thoroughly indeed (use the locket whenever you can, grope at crabs and Zeftyrs, and dunno what else) and do not use the help you get water.
An average thoroughness (*smirk*) will get you wind.
If you go directly to Sernia as soon as you can and rush without looking left and right to get you spirit guide, and use the help all the time even for this, I guess you'll get fire; but since I never actually tried that hard to get fire, I can't really say. I'll try this winter, though.

I know this is an ancient thread that people may not look at ever but there's this 'score' guide (I did not come up with this):

Myst IV Score Guide

Take a photo on the monorail: 0.1
Finish the sound puzzle with Atrus: 0.1
See Yeesha's gecko: 0.1
Watch Yeesha play her flute: 0.1
Contact Atrus with the crystal viewer: 0.1

Link to both Haven and Spire from Tomahna: 0.125
Link to Tomahna from both Haven and Spire: 0.125
Link to Serenia from Tomahna: 0.125
Link to Tomahna from Serenia: 0.125

Spend time in the game: 0.5 total for 20 hours (0.0004 per minute)
Use the Amulet: 0.5 total for all 101 flashbacks (0.0050 per flashback)
**Use the zip feature: 0.5 total for 30 uses (0.0167 per use)
**Use the hint map: 0.5 total for 25 uses (0.02 per use)

Results:
Child of Fire: 0 to 1 Drawn by the excitement of new experiences, always seeking adventure over stasis. Sometimes your desire to succeed makes you miss the deeper meaning but you always find the answers you seek when you really want them.

Child of Wind: 1 to 2 Attracted by challenge and diversity. Always moving swiftly to the heart of the matter yet willing to take the time needed to understand it.

Child of Water: 2 to 3 You appreciate the beauty and richness of life around you. You are confident in your ability to succeed but willing to seek help when answers seem elusive.

**It should be noted that I found out that the zip feature and hint map actually SUBTRACT from your overall score, instead of adding to it.

So to get a child of fire (which I did for the very first time the other day since I only just barely learned that it subtracts), I did NOTHING from the first section in the score guide. I went ONLY to Spire (didn't do Haven at all) simply because you need to go there for the color code on the elevator. Didn't use the Amulet AT ALL, didn't read any journals either (just to be safe). And then I used the zip feature and the hint map as often as I could. I ended up getting to the Hall of Spirits in just under 3 hours, and I got a child of Fire.
