Confusing as heck...

I just watched this movie OnDemand yesterday night. I liked it and everything, but there was a problem. Even though it was cool and entertaining to watch, the whole thing was as confusing as heck. What on Earth was the deal with the burn victim and Dr. Akai? What exactly was the virus? an actual sickness, or just something in your mind, like being under a spell or something? The last 15 minutes really just had me going "HUH?!".
