The boy who wants to be a surgeon (spoilers)

I'm confused. He was like sitting all through the night, totally untouched by Dr. A's insanity. (don't know how to spell his name. he's the main character) He was practicing on sewing up fake skin but how the hell the doctor he was supposed to wake up got these stitches or died from it???
