I think we have a cultural misunderstanding here.Ashley is arguably the most normal person in the movie. _______________For easy markup see http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/42255

What? No way. She's just nice... geez! She's very bright and perceptive... Just because she doesn't let life's hardships destroy her spirit like the majority of other people!

^^this. She was not slow. She was southern and true to it. I think she was naive, certainly not stupid and bright and optimistic.

I'm southern and thought she displayed a southern accent absolutely beautifully. I was blown away...not just by her accent, but by her mannerisms...she had southern mannerisms even.

Yeah she was overly cheerful. I think that since she felt so comfortable telling people everything about her that she felt that others would not mind her asking such personal quesitons.

Amy Adams is an amazing actress. She absolutely deserted that Oscar nod for playing Ashely, because she did a spectacular job.

She was not Forrest Gump-ish at all. Her character is actually quite conscious and open minded although, I can see how you can interpret her curious and easily intrigued personality as naive. Ashley understands she lives in small rural town with limited access to information but she also understands that there is an entire world outside the realms of her Southern town filled with culture and despite not knowing much about it all, it fascinates her. She craved intellect, almost like she was infatuated with it and that is what makes her smart - her thirst for knowledge. She was also very genuinely sweet and generous. I loved Amy Adams in this film! For me, she stole every scene she was apart of.
