Freaking George!

I don't understand why he was such a jerk in the end and not allowing Madeleine to go see Ashley. Was it ever explained? I mean, Madeleine insisted on going to see the artist instead of going to the hospital but that was when it seemed like everything was going perfectly. Ashley adored Madeleine (and vice versa). She could have used her friendship. I ended up really hating George.

He wasn't really nice at the end because I guess he was upset that she chose work over family.

However, this was an inconsistency in his character because he said something along the lines of family means a lot when he hadn't seen them for 3 years! Unless he was just saying that to guilt trip her...

No, it is not an inconsistency in his character. You have to think about what is going on, and we do not have enough information to understand that until we see George and Ashley in the hospital.See my reply to the OP.

I can't even begin to imagine how you could have come up with that crap.

You need to think about George and Ashley's very close relationship. You need to think about what it would do to Johnny if he realized that the one thing that he has, Ashley, is in some ways closer to his despised older brother that she is to him.I do not believe that there was sex between George and Ashley, and objectively they are simply completely different sorts of relationships, but it would feel to Johnny as if, once again, his brother was better than he was. That is why Johnny hits George. George was able to do at the hospital what Johnny should have done but wasn't able to do. Once again, George succeeded and Johnny failed.
I mean, Madeleine insisted on going to see the artist instead of going to the hospital
Please remember that Madeleine had tried to go to the hospital with Peg earlier and was rejected and told to wait for her husband. Peg doesn't want her at the hospital. Johnny doesn't want her at the hospital. There's nothing that she can do there to help Ashley. George had not previously given any indication the family is important to him. The only part of his family that is important to him is Ashley, but since he has carefully hidden that, Madeleine has no way to know that.

George is not going to go home again. Additional bonding between Ashley and Madeleine can only cause problems.

I got the impression that George didn't let Madeleine see Ashley because he didn't want them to bond too much - and therefore give them a reason to return

I think, in particular, that he does not want Madeleine to be lobbying for a return visit. He does not want to explain to his wife his relationship with Ashley. Part of this is that he grew up hiding his feelings in order to survive his mother, and he's just not used to being open.I don't believe George's relationship with Ashley was sexual, but I think he does not want to take the chance that Madeleine would not believe him. Or maybe she would believe him, but there would always be that lingering bit of doubt in the back of her mind. Easier to just not have to explain why he does not want to be around Ashley and Johnny because something might slip.
