I just finished watching this movie. This movie is not as bad as some of the reviews make it to be. Its definitely not the best but is definitely not the worst. The cinemotography was well done as praised by other reviewers on the board. The artistic direction with set and costume also very good. I got the impression from some of the bad reviews that they were comparing it to the French mini series and maybe this is why they didn't give it a good review. I have never seen the mini series of Jacquou le Croquant, so I watched it with no expectation and I enjoyed it. I didn't notice the bad acting from the actor that played the adult Jacquou. His acting wasn't memorable but it wasn't distracting from the movie. For me I found the actor that played the priest who adopted Jacquou to be the most memorable character for me and the best acted character. To those who can't decided to watch it because it got some bad reviews. Watch the trailer. If you find the trailer interesting than go out and rent it. Taste is subjective especially with foreign films. As for recommandation of other foreign films, these are the ones I have enjoyed over the years of watching alot of movies: Malena (Italian...the beautiful Monica Belluci and Morricono does the score), In the Mood for Love (Chinese...a plodding love story of unrequitted love. Not everybody will like this movie it's slow, but it has this nostelgic 60s feel that utilize Nat King Cole in its score, beautiful chong-sams and beautiful cinemtography. The chemistry between Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung as two lovers that can't be just adds to the beauty of this film), Nine Queens (Spanish...I think. Loved it. Smart script.), The Vanishing (French...Disturbing in a subtle way), Shiri (Korean...Broke box office record in Asia ousting Titanic from its 4.3 million record in 1999. I am surprised Hollywood hasn't ripped this movie off yet. Its good but don't read the synopsis of it because it will most likely spoil the ending.), Oldboy (Korean...another goody in a NC17 way. The twist hits you in the face so hard you couldn't even see it coming. Apparently hollywood is doing a remake of this. Trust me. It wouldn't be as good.) Infernal Affair (Chinese...the Departed took this award winning HK movie and remade it into a Hollywood version. I perfer the original HK version because its grittier and the ending is not the good guys always prevail ending. If you enjoyed the Departed watch this version and you mignt be delightfully surprised), Devdas (Indian...this one got mixed reviews, but I loved it for its gorgeous costume and set. Plus Aishwaya Rai looks gorgeous in this movie.)
