Do Any Theatres Actually Show NC-17 Movies?

I don't think I have ever seen a theatre that shows NC-17 movies. I know the fact that I have never seen one doesn't mean that they don't exist but I was wondering if anyone here has seen or knows of any.

What are some NC-17 recent films? It seems that there are a lot of films that come out with no rating rather than the NC-17 if they have the choice. Of course here in L.A., ALL movies that are theatrically released are shown here, but I'm sure this is definately not the case in other parts of the country.

Boogie,

I know what you mean about the no rating thing but I don't recall having seen a film with no rating being shown in any theatres around here either. You can usually get an unrated version of movies on DVD if one is released at video stores around here though.

I will admit that the area I live in is a lot more conservative minded than Los Angeles is but I can recall back in the days before video in the 70's there were a few X-Rated theatres in this area in some of the bigger towns although I was too young to go to any of them at the time.

You also sometimes hear of a movie that when first rated gets the NC-17 rating then has scene cuts made to eventually get an R rating upon resubmission.

reply

Absolutely. The whole point of the NC-17 was as an alternative to the porn-stigmatized X. Obviously it's become one and the same. So in other words, it's pointless, but than again, so is the MPAA in general.

reply

Well, at least today we have home video and you can almost always find the non-rated or NC-17 rated versions of films somewhere even if it's not the local video store.

reply

Theatres that show NC-17 movies are usually private ones that have a very specific target audience. This, of course, usually means they show horror movies and other violent movies. Showing pornography in theatres just isn't worth it anymore, especially after home video revolutionized porn industry.

In the last 10 years or so, I have seen a handful of NC-17 or unrated films at the theater (a MALL theater no less). The 3 that come to mind are Crash (1996), Showgirls, & Brown Bunny (unrated but way more than NC-17 material).

I know usually Nc-17 is a death sentence for movies, but at least in San Antonio TX there is 1 theater I know of that shows those films.

The theater down the street from my apt (in Arlington, VA) showed NC-17 movies (the marquee even showed the rating) recently: Lust, Caution and The Aristocrats (two examples).

NC-17s in the past that have played there: L.I.E., Happiness, The Dreamers

Showgirls had the widest release ever for an NC-17 movie. It is also singlehandedly responsible for completely ruining the rating. As much as I like his other movies... a big middle finger and an emphatic **** YOU to Paul Verhoeven for ****ing it up for anyone trying to make serious films with mature subject matter.
