The wikipedia page gives details of different accounts, each suggesting a different (and more extreme) level of torture than the previous. Almost as if they were competing to outdo each other in their description of his injuries.

IIRC the character's fate is depicted in this film's companion piece, "Letters from Iwo Jima". The Japs bayonet him a few times, nothing as horrible as the treatment depicted on the Wikipedia page (or implied by the reactions of the Marines who find his corpse in this film).
