I don't think her parents knew she wanted to have sex, only her grandmother pieced it together later on. I think they were just trying to protect her from heartbreak. They didn't know Beagle was really a nice guy. The world is hard, and it's even harder for someone suffering from Friedreich's Ataxia. They didn't want her to get her hopes up and be disappointed.

The mom thought of her her daughter as fragile and I can't say as I blame her. I'm not saying she is correct in being overly protective but I completely understand why she did.
