This film has been chosen over Pan's Layrinth at the AFFF.

At The Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival.
This film has been chosen over Pan's Labyrinth.
I haven't seen either film.
But I wondered what the people who did saw the both of them thought about it.
Knowing that Pan's Labyrinth was very popular this year.
And this film went a little bit unnoticed.
My qeustion is wich of these 2 films is the best.

I rated Adams Æbler 5 and Pan's labyrinth 9 I think, I'm from Denmark and I'm quite bored with Danish movies, in my opinion they're all the same, it's just redone jokes and slightly changed scripts.
Pan's labyrinth was both unique, entertaining and beautiful.
But of course, that's just my opinion, a lot of my friends prefer Adams Æbler.. I guess it's just a matter of taste :)

I like movieeees

I'm from germany and have to say I would they are either tied or PL's Labyrinth is slightly superior.
Both tell great stories.

PL is an allegory.
It reintroduces/ reinvents the fairy tales for the cinema in a unique way.
It is viusally very appealing and also the acting is very convincing.

AA is a black comedy, but much more.
It's a bible story adapted to modern times.
AA received rather poor ratings, which I can't understand.
Perhaps too much is lost in translation?

AA is by far better.

I have the exact same opinions about danish movies, and usually don't see them, since they are, well, lame in my opinion. And yes, I am danish too.

I gave Pans L. 8/10, and Adams Apples 9/10. I was more entertained with AA, since it had a great story, and you never knew what would happen compared to PL.

I would recommend both, but AA more, unless you are very much into fantasy.

reply

I'm danish and I've given AA 7 and PL 8.

I think, it's extremely difficult to compare those two movies, cause they treat completely different themes.

I preferred AA to PL, I think, AA is more original. There are many similarities between del Toros PL and his own "Devils Backbone".

AA: 8/10
PL: 7/10

Well I am German too and I have to say I couldn't share all this enthusiasm about PL...so i definitely prefer AA!

I am also German and definitely prefered AA! Great black-humored story, fantastic actors. I am a huge danish movie Fan which doesn't mean that I like all danish movies. I am also a huge Fan of After the wedding (also with M. Mikkelsen)and hoped that it would make it at the oscars. Shame that it didn't.

AA: 9/10
PL: 8/10

AA has just premiered here but got it on DVD. I don't really see why you should compare the two (other than the fact they were shown together and one finished first). I would call Pan's L a magic realistic story as only the Spanish can make them. A hard realistic story line mixed with a fantasy world that couldn't exist in the real world but represents our inner world: things that happen in our imagination. Although some of the developments tend to be a bit unbelievable AA has a realistic storyline in comparison to PL. There are some thematic similarities like good versus evil, or life-teaching-lessons or even the relation with war, but those are so abstract and common that it is really no reason to compare them.

I enjoyed them both very much for very different reasons and rate both 9/10.

If you're asking how AA could have gotten chosen over PL, perhaps it was partly a question of good taste. It encourages me to think that such an honest and brave movie could have won over the judges.

I don't remember if I saw PL through to the end, but despite its evident beauty, I believe I found it a bit dull ... predictable, as I believe someone said, and maybe pandering to a certain message. It may have been made to impress, move and make money. I'm not sure AA was, and for that reason, it was so refreshing!

I have seen Pan's Labrynth several times, and I loved it.
I just saw this.. and found it very interesting.
I am beginning to love Mads Mikkleston.
I don't think I laughed during this movie...
but I cried once or twice.

definitely dark humor... darker than I am used to.
but this movie will not get out of my head...
I liked it a lot.
