Why do they not hire bodyguards ?

So, Freddo, The Libanese and The Dandy run an extremely dangerous gang in Rome. They have made their way to the top by assassinating the other Rome's mobsters. Obviously they can expect that their own life is at rick. And nevertheless, they walk around unprotected by bodyguards, and are easy targets. Il Dandi and il lebanese would not have been killed in the street by surprise if correctly protected, by, say, two armed bodyguards... What the point of being a gangsta and having loads of money if you come out by yourself like the first Joe Smith?
